STEERING GEAR BOX

I own 1953 jubilee and I tried to check the level of the gear oil , But unable to see it as the plug is too small. How do you do check the gear oil ? and how much amount of gear oil it should be in ? I read owner manual didnot find the answer. Thank you

Not familiar with your particular model but I just had my 1973 rebuilt as the top thrust bearing went out in it (manual steer). When I took it apart it was full of what appeared to be 90W oil. Took to local shop for a rebuild and repairman said it common for them to go out without warning. Top bearing just lets go and all the small bearing fall down in your worm gears. I was plowing and going very slow. thank goodness I wasn't coming down my dirt road in 8th gear or I would have shot out into the woods. Had no steering or warning,,,Sorry I couldn't help more but hope I helped some....Ricky in North Carolina

I use a small screwdriver as a dipstick. If it is dry, alot of guys put a zert in the plug hole and fill it with a light greese. I replaced the bearings and seals in mine and it still leaks a little. I'm sure Sondguy has a fix for it. Maybe he will respond.

I got a 1954 NAA and put 80/90w in my steering gear box through a small tube like funnel. You can insert a zert fitting and use John Deere Corn gease which works good. Mine does not leak so I stayed with the 80/90 weight oil.

do yourself a favor.. if the box is still tight and not worn out the thrust bearings or have alot of backlash, pump it full of #0 or #00 ep grease using a zerk int hat plug hole. pump till it comes out under the steering wheel. tabkes almnost 2 tubes IF empty.
