Stihl 041 AV Super

Just bought a very used Stihl 041 Super.Air filter element is missing.Also,I probably need a carb kit.It won't stay running.I can't seem to find anyone on line that lists parts for this saw.When I looked at the saw before I bought it,it didn't look too old.It seemed to age before I got it home and looked at it again.Any idea how old this saw could be?Any part sources? Thanks.

Carbs kits are easy to get - even at NAPA and cost around $4. Just have them order it from the NAPA small-engine parts catalog - get a kit for a Tillotson HS carb. I just bought 6 kits last week. $3.75 each.

041 Super air-filter is the same as used on the regular 041AV or 041 Farm Boss. Tons of them for sale on Ebay.

As to age? I've got one here I bought at the Deere and Stihl dealership I worked at in the 80s. As I recall, the 041 Super "Electronic" came out around 1985.

Chances are, your problems are not in the carb. 041s are prone to two problems related to fuel delivery. #1 is the rubber impulse hose breaking that runs the fuel pump - a very easy fix. #2 is the fiber intake-manifold block coming loose and the gasket between it and the cylinder getting sucked in. Also a pretty easy fix - just use Loctite when you put it back together.

The 041 Super is basically the exact same saw as a regular 041 except for the larger piston and jug. A standard 041 is 61 ccs /3.4 cubic inches with a 44 mm bore. 041 Super is 72 ccs/4.4 cubic inches with a 48 mm bore. I've got three of them. They are a good lugging saw - but don't have a high chain speed. Many smaller and ligher saws will out-cut it with good sharp chains.

General rule of thumb with all the older Stihl saws is this. Saws with horizontal jugs are slow - e.g. 040, 041, 051, etc. Stihl saws with upright or angle cylinders run fast - e.g. 030, 031, 045, 056, S10, 08S, etc.

check closely for loose or missing screws. This is one saw Stihl should not have supersized. The bigger jug but nothing else built heavier, meant they shook themselves apart every day in the timber business. It wasn't out very long til they replaced it with 042 AV.

The standard 041 wasn't any different. They just did a lousy job of assembling them at the factory. We sold 041s and 041 Supers new - and they all shook apart if we sold "as is" from Stihl. We took all new Stihl saws apart and put back together with Loctite and Allen-drive screw - and after that, they held together fine.

I've got an 041 Super I've been using for 20 years and not had a single problem with it.

As to the generation of saws that came out after the 041, 045, 056, etc. - we lost many of our logging customers because of all the plastic. Many went over to Huskys. Now - I guess they all have lots of plastic.

Stihl only sells saws through their dealer network. Find list of local dealers on Sthil website. Even then, they might have to order a part although filters should be stocked.
