stolen tractor check

Is there any place on the internet where I can go to check a tractors serial number to find out if the tractor has been stolen. I wish to by a 2006 john deere but would like to see if it is all clear. Also, the sale is in Georgia and the person said there is no titles or registration for a tractor in that state, all I will recieve is a bill of sale. Is this true?

Ask at your local DEERE dealers'. They have access to some sort of on-line registry of their tractors that have been reported stolen.

Might not prove anything for 100% certain, but it costs NOTHING to ask if they can help you.

I don't know of any titles or registration anywhere here in the US.

Just a bill of sale is all that I know of.

You mean to say that you cannot find out if the people who are selling you the tractor arent above board. Sure wouldnt be hard to find out if they are honest just go talk to the local law people.

I know you can take a serial from a CaseIH to a dealer and they can tell you who the tractor was orginally sold to. Probably Deere can do the same.

If you have the serial Number Deere can tell you if its been reported stolen also the bigger issue may be if it has a lien against it with newer equipment purchases this can turn into a real headache

Much more likely to find out the bank owns it.

Heck anymore it's hard to say who's honest or not sometimes. The current owners could have bought it from someone, who bought it from someone, who stole it. It doesn't hurt to check anymore if you can.

nivek: Bank and Credit leins are your main concern, any tractor that new that has been stolen is parted out PDQ.

Most law enforcement agencies will check a brand and serial number in NCIC (a national crime information computer system) for you. Most reported stolen goods are entered there if a serial number is provided by the victim.

And, you can ask your county sheriff to run a check on the NCIC for stolen equipment.

However you should remember that if the tractor is in NCIC as stolen, most likely the law enforcement agency will impound the tractor and you will lose it.

If you are suspicious that the tractor might be stolen, there must be a reason or reasons. Was the price ridiculously low, or did the sellers appear real shady? If the tractor IS a stolen, then you always run the risk that it will be taken away from you. But it is unlikely that you could be convicted of possession of stolen property unless there is evidence that you KNEW it was stolen (at least in my state!!!). If it is a stolen tractor, I sure would not hold my breath waiting to get my money back from the seller...even if they were convicted of stealing it. So you run some risk in checking the tractor with law enforcement. You could lose all your investment.

But if you are concerned, having it checked is the right thing to do. Let your conscience be your guide. Good luck!

Thanks for everyone for the replys. The reason I am asking is because I am from Montreal Canada and we have to register our tractors into our name and when we sell it the registration gets signed onto the new buyer, like a car. I thought it was a bit odd that there is only a bill of sale for the transaction. The tractor is being sold by a used equipement dealer that has been in business for a long while. I like to check to see if the item was ever stolen because it could be a real headache if it was and I bought it.
A few people mentioned loans and liens, how would I check if the tractor has a clean title if it does not have a title?
