Strange foul-up

Someone (my brother-in-law) blew out the fuel line from the
sed. bowl to the carb with high pressure air without
disconnecting it from the carb. Afterwards fuel flowed freely
from the carb onto the the ground. After disassembly I found
that the floats were rather flat and could not be adjusted to stop
the flow.

As a stop gap measure, I drilled out the small hole in each float,
used air to reinflate them and soldered the hole shut. The floats
seem to shut off the fuel, but I am reasonably sure the standard
adjustment (1/4 in, I think) is no longer valid.

Has this ever happened to anyone out there? If so, did you have
to buy new floats?

yep.. you imploded yer floats.. I think i'd replace them... it was a ham handed maneuver that did this... you remove lines to clean them.. you don't blow all the crud INTO the carb!!!

you know where to send the repair bill.

I have fixed them also, and repaired leaking (gas filled)floats.Solider up, then after repair and to check for leaks put them of all most boiling water,no bubbles and its good to go.

I have also seen them crushed from the carb having water in the bottom and it freezing up,on tractors that have been setting a while.

Your host here has them for $18.82, we've got them for $13.83. Either way, pretty cheap bill for your brother in law! ;=)

I found the same in my '50 barn find 8N. The floats were slightly squashed and there was an in-line filter in the line making me think it was a victim of compressed air. I wonder if submerging it in boiling water would 'plump' it like a hot dog? I didn't pitch it and might try that.

Don"t need to order anything right now but good info for the future. Will check with you when I need something..Got a web address or email you can send for future contact? Thanks

You might pay $9 for a float to or screw to be shipped to you. But you can bet I'm way smarter than that buddy boy..

(quoted from post at 17:54:30 07/06/09) It costs 9 bucks to ship most packages now.Do you want your part shipped or drive 500 miles to pick it up ?

USPS flat rate is 4.80 for the small box (holds a half dozen floats, or 9.85 for the mediium box - probably holds 2 dozen. All that aside it costs money to have someone package and ship parts - $9 of gas gets me about 50 miles in my truck not counting wear and tear on the vehicle and my time which I value considerably in excess of $10/hr.

My nearby Tractor Supply Comany stocks them now...Didnt notice the price but they have them. They been stocking more tractor parts lately. The also cot rid of the sliding racks!!! :D

I did that dumb move once ;-), cost me a new float, not quite as app as you being able to fix them, bought the new float at this web site, wasnt much, TSC had one, they wanted $33.00 for it, I pointed it out to the sales clerk and told him it was $22.00 over the price here,he said he would check in to it...

so to answer your questions, Yep I did it, sheepishly acknoleging my goof, and yrp cost me a new float .

Our NAPA is carrying N parts now. A little better inventory than TSC. @ the same price but you can talk to someone that knows something plus get NAPA parts when necessary. I'm happy.
