Stuck motor

40 A john Deere, the motor has been stuck about 2 1/2 years. filled it with deisel a 1 year ago and haven't touched it since. What's the easiest way to free it? It was dumped on me 3 years ago along with a 51 A for parts. The guy wanted the 40 rebuilt but, I haven't seen any cash. Thought I might play with it a little myself. John

the '51 A won't have hardly any parts that will interchange with the '40.

You can unstick it by elevating the front wheels so the fluid goes to the top of the piston. I would fill each cylinder with ATF and let soak for a while. you might get a big bar and hang a 5 gallon bucket of water on the end of it and see if it moves any in a few days (or weeks!)

I got a B that had been stuck almost ten years. I made a bracket on the flywheel with a pipe welded on so I could put a bar on it about 6 foot long. I hung a weight on it for one day, then lifted up on it and stuck a 2 by 4 (cut to length) under to change the pressure the next day. Back and forth for 5 days and it moved. Take off the valve cover and make sure the valves are free or you may break a rocker arm.

i'd remove the ends caps off the rods first and turn the crank where the pistons have a little room to move without trying to turn everything at once. i never have understood why not go on a take the block off to start with. if its been stuck that long then i would want to take the pistons out and at a minimum hone the cylinder walls any way. if your going to have to do that it seems to me that it would be just about as ease to take it out where you could get the pistons out without having to wait weeks and months and then you might still have to tear it down to get them to move. just my 4 cents worth. use to cost 2 cents, but things have gone up in price.

What's the easiest way to free it? This may not be the easiest or quickest way to free a stuck motor, but it worked for me.

Lazarus, my 40B, had a stuck motor.

I removed both spark plugs and petcocks and used an air hose to “blow out” a mixture of diesel, water, and other unidentified materials.

I then added PB Blaster up to the spark plug threads on both cylinders.

I agree with teddy52food’s advice: Take off the valve cover and make sure the valves are free or you may break a rocker arm.

After 6 months of other projects and “honey do’s”, I removed the head.

There was one broken valve and three stuck valves.

I used a 3’ wrench that was left over from my early years at the steel mill.

The wrench is made of 1” hex steel and shaped like an “F”.

Put the wrench on the flywheel and added another 2” cheater pipe about 4’ long.

After applying my full weight, 160lbs of pure muscle, the flywheel moved about an inch.

Turned the wrench over, put the cheater pipe back on, and worked in the opposite direction.

After about 5 or 6 more tries, the flywheel made a 360 complete turn.

I agree with johns48jdb’s advice: I will take the pistons out, put in new rings, and hone the cylinder walls while it is apart.

i had an allis b stuck and after filling all of the cylinders with blaster and transmition fluid every day for about 2 weeks i tried the best advice that i had got and i jacked up one of the back wheels ,put the tractor in gear and every day i would go out and rock the back wheel back and forth after about a week i could see the fan trying to turn.it finally broke loose and is running good today.some other good advise was to be patient
