Stump Killer

I use to mix used motor oil and 245-T and brush it on newly cut stumps to kill them. 245-T hasnt been sold for many years. What do you use on stumps these days to kill them? I was hoping it was something I could mix with motor oil to dilute out and make it last longer but I have no idea these days. Thanks for the help

glyphos. (Roundup) also works. use paint brush and apply to top outer top area of stump. use it straight do not dilute. check data sheet for product it is listed for this use.

I have used roundup with the purple cap and mixed 50/50 with diesel fuel, kills them dead. The parks dept. here uses the same roundup and mixes 50/50 with anti freeze. They cut out a lot of buck thorn in the fall and early winter.

I've used Copper sulfate, just drill some holes deep in the stump pour in the CS and it will kill them. It worked for me! Jim in N M

Glyphosate and motor oil or diesel arent compatable as a stump treatment mixture, and not the best choice. It's probably the little bit of glyphosate or maybe even the oil that does the killing, but not real environmentally friendly. Depending on the species, a 100% to 50% blend of Glyphosate (diluted if necesary with water) is plenty sufficient. For hard to kill species, used an ester based triclopyr (Garlon 4, Remedy, etc) mixed 80% vegetable based crop oil with 20% herbicide. You only need to treat the cambium layer of a cut stump. That would be approximately the outside +-1.5" of a 6" tree. Now's not a good time to use this method, sap is rising and wont take the herbicide down to the roots. Tordon's is good too but illegal here, so I cant speak for it

Crossbow, but it is a restricted use pesticide.

If you don't have many to kill as you cut just get some stump treatment at a garden/landscaping shop.

You only need to coat the outer edge of the stump, not the entire stump so it goes a long way.
