Super 77 Oliver info?

Can anyone tell me what the paint job on a super 77 is suppose to be like. We recently purchased one and the serial number shows that it is a 1955 but the tractor looks like it has had the cast centers painted green from the factory. However, I was told that the green wheels and rims were only in the 1956 year. Also was there any common problems with the rear ends on these tractors this one seems to have a clunking only at higher speeds. It seems to be coming from around the bull gear area on the right hand side of the tractor. Any info would be helpful thanks.

JT, i think the first supers all had green wheels. i would check for a loose wheel or loose hub. i would not be driving it around until you find what is causing the clunk. maybe a bull gear has a tooth missing and that could really mess things up if the broken tooth gets in the wrong place. take a good look at your tires, are the beads on all the way around? things like that. i think the rears and transmissions on the tractors are very good, but things can happen. just my thoughts, chuck

They had green wheels until the "Improved Super" came out in 57. As far as the clunk,not a common problem,but like Chuck says,could be a cog out of a bull gear. Only one I ever knew of for that to happen was Dads 66. But,yea,check all of your wheel bolts,u-bolts on the hubs,etc. On my 1600,somebody had run it with the u-bolts loose and wore the key on the hub,but that one only clunked when starting ahead or backing up. It just shucked forward and back on the axle.

This is a 1955 oliver super 77 It's a old restoration 19 yrs ago. It was all green when I bought it.

Thanks for the information guys on the paint. As for the clunk it has to be inside the rearend because the bead of the tire is on fully because I just mounted the tire on that side and the hub bolts are tight. The tractor seems to have had a pretty ruff life and has been coubled up. It had a ford loader on it and we spent an hour cutting it off of it when we got it home. The motor is sound though she runs smooth and dont smoke. Also do you guys know of any good oliver salvage yards where a guy might be able to get some parts we have a lot of sheetmetal missing and the air breather assembly? Thanks again.

We can point you towards salvage yards but it would help if we knew your approximate location.

Mike, what is that front axle off of? Who ever fabricated it did a good job. It is not a row crop wheatland axle.

This is something I fabricated 16 yrs ago. I wanted to put a OEM wide front with P.S but at the time they where hard to find in our neck of the woods.
So I decided to make my own wide front and have power steering on it also.
This is a rear steering axle from a JD 95 combine plus I took the steering motor and directional valve from it also. I had to narrow axle width down 8 inches and I made up my own pedistal for it. Wasn"t sure if this would hold up but it been on there 16 yrs and I had no problems what so ever. My biggest head ache was makeing up a power steering/alternator bracket wasn"t much room up under the hood to pay with.
