i was wondering if there were any lrger valves that could be used and also how much could be shaved off with flat top pistons

valves will have to be custom made,shaving head will not help much ,porting with bigger valves will get a few horse like maybe 3-5 i did all that alot of money , later bolted a 320 in instant 30 horse power

First of all which head do you have? The early Super 88 diesels had larger valves to start with. Than there was an exchange program and smaller valves were installed to improve starting. So to raise the compression you will gain more by setting the intake valves to the correct recession as most of them are not and then set the exhaust valves to a matching stem height.

If your looking to add power, as others have said headwork can get expensive very quickly with little return. Set the valves as JSchwiebert mentioned, it will start quickly and run smoothly. Does it have the stock size pistons? You could increase the bore to 3 7/8 by installing 1800C sleeves and pistons, I believe the pistons are the same height as the stock 3 3/4. Also you could install a Roosa Master inj. pump which will make more power and are easier to adjust. To do this you will need the front and rear timing cover, some gears and the injection lines.
