How can the ignition timing have anything to do with this? All spark ignition engines I’ve ever worked on shut off the spark to stop the engine.
Big Boar
Of the other items mentioned, engine idle speed to fast is the main cause of this. Make sure the throttle is forward as far as it goes when shutting it off. Carbon build up probably second in line.
Well i do believe i have a LITTLE more experience with engines here . Yea not giving full thought and NOT SEEING the tractor in question ever gave a thought to the Alt. back feed . Let's see here i first started wrenchen back in around 1960 learning on BIG TONKA TOYS from the OLD GUYS . in `1963 when the new TONKA TOY arrived and i was the one to run it the OLD MAN sent me off to Cat traing to learn how to rebuild the power shift transmissions since the new FLEET of Cat's were coming and i got my new COMPANY truck as now i was full time along with every tool in a Mac. catalogue along with OTC Pullers including a new 100 ton set and potable track pin press . Not only did i run the TONKA TOYS i worked on them along when needed drove the fifty ton low boy . I was still in high school back then and a class A operating engineer . Some kid played sports me i played with motors and cars . I loved horse power and to get what i wanted i BUILT IT . When i did not know i asked the OLD GUYS . Where i worked we did EVERY THING IN HOUSE . The only thing we could not do in house was balance a crank and for that it had to go to Akron . And i could run every machine shop piece of equipment just like the OLD GUYS , Ya think you could do that at 16-and 17 years old ??? during the dirt moving months we worked moving dirt and if a machine went down ya FIXED IT where it died . I might be the only one on the job site with tools and welder working with people called in from the Hall that were there to RUN equipment that could not offer much help other then lift or hold . When winter set in we worked in the shop fixen and rebuilding along side the personnel who worked at the main shop . The OLD MAN i worked for owned not one but three Large heavy construction companys and one of the larger farms in the county . If he liked you you had a JOB FULL TIME and ya did what ever sometimes i would end up out at the farm doing Farm work . Every evening after 5 either my boss John or myself would have to haul a tank of diesel fuel out to the farm to top the farm tank off from the inground storage at the shop where was where 30000 gallon tanks were filled by tankers and the cost at the shop for Sohio Diesel supreme was 10 cents a gallon but if they came to the farm it was 14 cents a gallon . We use to have high test gas at the shop for the gas powered trucks that employees could buy at 15 cents a gallon but there were a couple that started not marking down what they took SOOOOO the old man said no more and set up a account at the little fuel stop on the west side of town where we could fill the TRUCKS but a few of us could still buy under the company name at company prices if we paid CASH . I lost my company job when i got back from Nam due to a union split and missed the book transfer dead line and could not transfer my book and to go to the new local i had to start at the bottom of the totom pole . I got ASKED to go to work for a Chrysler Plymouth dealer as a mechanic and took that job and was sent to EVERY CHRYSLER school and training and Passed the MASTER TECH program on the top five LIST and in my area i was one of two in the DISTRICT who was certified to work on the HEMI's and 440 6 Pac. . I could make your MOPAR RUN . Stayed there till the GM and i had a disagreement over my new 1969 Road Runner 440 -6 pac that the owned and i worked out on a two car deal as i also ordered in a new 69 Road Runner convertible for my one friend at a fantastic price My buddy got his but the BOSS was on vacation and the GM thought he owned the place and would not let me have my car SO having the temper i have we walked and that Road Runner sat at the dealership till sometime in late 74 before anybody would even offer to buy it . When the Owned came back the car setting in the show room and my stalls were empty and i was GONE and my customer base was no longer coming to the dealership the cocky GM was out the door . I was out of work for 24 hours when a large Ford dealer called and offered me the job of performance tech and adviser and to take charge to the dealers two drag cars. plus i got saddled with big truck work due to the fact i knew Diesels So yea i do believe i know a wee bit more about engines then you . How many winning pulling tractors have you built ?????? I don't built for every one but when i do you can bet your in for a fun ride .

:oops::rolleyes: Super M with a “dieseling or run on problem”?? I’m sure someone will enjoy your historic resume, I personally don’t care.
And PS, I am not arguing whether or not you have more experience in mechanics because you definitely do. Please keep the replies here on topic. If you want to relive the past I would suggest you take it over to the “off topic” forum “Tractor Tales”

Dag-gum........I was reading along hoping I would find out some good information about a farmall M......but no..... Just a massive word salad from some guy who can't stay on topic 🧐. Mumbling about cars and trucks and BIG TONKA TOYS 😂😂😂😂. Geeze. How about we make up a golden award and send it to him...."smartest guy on Yesterday's Tractors"........??

Sounds like a fine idea. Why i bet with his extreme knowledge he can fix a tractor just by looking at it!!! Maybe the original poster can send him a picture of the M. He can fix it just by looking at the picture.

In '78 I took my Galaxie over to Sears Point for the Wednesday Night Drags. It's a '62, and an original 406 engine car, but I had a 14:1 427 in it at the time, cross-ram intake, .660 cam, 40 degrees timing, 12 in slicks and 5.14 gears and loud like only a 427 Ford can be. Made one easy pass to make sure it was going to go straight, then came back and let it eat. 6000 off the line, almost... went up about 6 inches and the driveshaft went out the bottom. Hit the kill switch, but the hot 14:1 engine just kept running on, driveshaft going around clunk clunk. The starter is waving at me with the kill it signal, I'm trying, man, it won't quit running on. I finally pumped the gas a couple times and it quit. Yeah, lots of things will make a gas engine run-on with the ignition off lol
When we were in the BUILD stage my boss at the time told me to address the drive shaft and rear axles . In m my first car a 56 Ford rag top with the 292 T Bird special that we first got our hands greasy we put a 3/4 grind Isky cam in it and two bird cage four bbls and a set of headman headers. We twisted and axle off on it and went to a heavier axle . Back in those days ya did not have all the fancy specialty companys ya could buy from BUT if ya dug thru the factory parts book ya could find stuff that would work . As for drive shafts ya went to several shops that did shaft work and they built ya something that ya would NOT twist in half . Side steepen the 11 inch dual disc at 6K would lift the ft on my 61 off by about a foot and slamming second at 9 K (yes we would shift a 9-9500) with give ya about 5-6 inches of air . I only ran a 9 inch slick . Built a 390 for my one buddy for his 68 F100 Ford Ranger , used the 391 crank the rods that were not in the everyday parts book a C5AX 6250 D cam 1.76 rockers a police interceptor 4BBL intake a 427 dual point dist 11.5 to 1 pistons fly cut for the valves 72 CC heads , don't remember the number .040 steel shim head gskts full balance job and stuff it into his pick up and he went hunting every bad arrs Chevel and making them eat crow Mikey's 390 would hit 8 k with ease and we left the 360 air cleaner on it . Ford had some wild lumpity sticks tucked away in the parts books . Like the C 9 OZ 6250 D cam for small blocks Man i installed a ton of them in 221thru302. take a 2BBl small block pull the intake and toss it and install the four BBl intake pull the heads and scrap the head gskt and use the .020 Steel , do a quicky CC job shim the stock valve springs .040 throw in a set of anit pump up lifters add the four Bbl aluim intake painted ford Blue Add in a tricked out small block dual point and it would plum get with the program The C 9 O Z D cam and lifters back then my cost now get this 19 . 95 across the parts counter and i sold them for 30 buck plus install .

I discovered in 1977 that the '66 TBird with the first-year 428 had 31-spline axles, while the 390 cars still had the 28's. I got lucky and found the housing and axles from one in a junkyard, and they are still in my 62 Galaxie today- exact same width as the Gal housing. I still have a NOS C8AX-D 427 cam in the original tube on the shelf, 330/600. Easily the evilist-sounding factory cam ever with 330 duration. Also have a repro version of the small-block "LeMans" cam with 318/510 and other real snorter

how did this go from a run on m Farmall to drag cars
I’ve heard it said that sometimes directing YT members is like herding cats.
I wonder if those intellectuals know they can relived their bench racing in “Direct (private) messages” and not affect someone here that is looking for information to fix a problem with their tractor? Hopefully with their astute knowledge level they can figure out how to accomplish it.
