Sven update: He is running!!!!!!

We finally got some time to get Sven’s wheels painted & mounted so we could pull start him. The starter motor would just kick out every time he fired and the motor was so tight that there wasn’t enough momentum to stay running. Now that he runs we have a few clean up items to do; fix the oil leak in the valve covers, shorten the check chains by one link, fix the leak in the exhaust coupler. Not too bad considering all that could have gone wrong with a “bean counter” doing the mechanicing. The oil pressure is a bit low (5# at slow idle and 30# at ½ throttle) but I can live with that. Now on to the tins.

Here is a video of the start up. In the interest of full disclosure, it is the second time we started him behind the truck but the first went just as fast.

Means you done everything right when the first start up goes like that. Congrats!

Sounds and looks good Dan

Sounds like he/she is running pretty darn good, probably just needs a good workout, pulling something. The slowing down of the motor when pto is in is probably from axle grease[90wt]being used in sumps.Mine does that a little in winter, but I use utf[m-134],which is thinner.good luck---lha

Great job on your tractor. I really enjoyed the clip too. I wish I had videoed the first start up of my tractor. It is nice to see history is being restored.

Nice job. I think that paint color is going to look really cool. When I bought my 8N it was painted blue and grey, but when I repainted I used the red and grey.......... now I wish I had left it..... oh well, maybe next time around.
Good luck and keep us updated as you progress.

Sorry for the late responses to the replies. Mutt & were busy running the motor in, adjusting the carb and fixing the oil leak from the valve covers. It turns out when I put the valve covers in place to paint the block I never put the gaskets on. Mutt discovered the problem & really cussed me out!

I did miss your motor post. Great looking job, can’t wait to hear it run. Let me know if you need any help mounting the loader. I can be there within 20 minutes or so & I’m guessing that is going to be more than a one man job.

Yep, we put the 90 wt. mineral oil this time (changed from 134-D) but zero leaks and the lift works much better now.

The starter works fine now that we have run the motor for a few hours. It just needed to loosen up so the engine turned over after the starter kicked out.

We tried a 12V battery on the starter with the same result as the 6V. The motor fired, then the bendix kicked out and no start.

The oil pressure before the rebuild was:
- 40# at idle
- 40# at fast idle
- 40# hot
- 40# cold
- 40# engine off
- 40# with the gauge on the bench
New gauge on Sven

AGGGG Pa!!!

Don't sweat the small stuff, wait till piston #4 either shoots into your pavemnet, or looks like the coolest Romen candle you have ever seen.
And then you will think about why you didn't put cotter pins in the piston castle nuts?!!?

?????
