it looks like i may be changing the clutch in my crawler. was wondering if someone could tell me the best way to get to it. i was thinking of pulling the engine ??? any advice would be apprciated. thanks, cliff

i replaced my clutch first and it didnt help. make sure thats your problem. you must pull the motor to replace clutch. remove all the cosmetics, sling the motor and after pulling, twist it sideways to allow access to cluth and pressure plate. i reccomend a pilot bearing and throwout bearing while youre in there.
my probem (amoung many)was the steering clutches, send me an email with you phone and ill talk you though it if necessary.

thanks for the email cliff, ill ask some questions here to help narrow things down a bit. if you have mechanical skills you should be able to fix the problem. ill walk you through all the adjustments you can do before tearing into the tractor.
1. check cluth pedal free travel, it should be 1 to 1 1/4 inches at pedal. adjust if neccessary.
2. do you have a TA? if so, if the tractor slips with ta both in and out, you can rule that out as a problem. a TA thats bad will only slip with lever back. lever forward is diect drive.
3. after adjusting clutch, check free travel of steering levers. measured at the top of lever, it should be 1 1/2 to 2 inches. if not, adjust as follows-there is an adjustment screw on each side of the steering clutch housing, right near the top, directly over the pinion shaft. probly a 3/4 or 15/16 wrench will loosen lock nut. pull lever all the way back, and turn adjustment bolt all the way in, then back off 1/4 turn. (if its all rusty or muddy, it may be hard to move.)you must hold lever back while adjusting. release lever and check free travel. if you got too much travel, hold back lever and move bolt out a little more, too little free travel go in with the bolt. tighten lock nut and repeat other side.
4.there is a spring inside the housing that holds pressure on the clutches. normally as the clutches wear, no adjustment is nessesary, but check it before you start buying stuff. use some type of spring weight scale(like for fish)and test force neccessary to pull a lever. it should be 30 to 35 lb. (35 is better, but makes a little harder to drive.)if you need to adjust, look for a 3/8 bolt head on housing under the seat. one will be center, the other a couple inches away. loosen the one holding dowm a locking plate.turn the center bolt out to increase lbs, and in to decrease. make the adjustment with lever forward then check with scale. some times these springs will loose stregth over time. it resembles a big valve spring. when i replaced mine, the old one was an inch shorter than the new one. if you cant get to 35lb, you may need the sping. i would guess you can turn bolt out 15 or so rounds before it comes out of the holder.(then you pull the cover off!) sorry this post is long, but i feel like it would take several calls to explain each thing. if you got questions, call 606-845-8607 mon-fri, 9-5. thanks ashley.

pork.. thanks for the information.. i will check each one. i will let you know what i find. cliff
