TD5 LOOSING PRIME I THINK

I have a TD5 with the BD-144. I have started it about 10 times in the last 3 months and then after about 2 weeks it will not start. The glow plugs seem to be working. I can use WD-40 in the manifold and get it started. The fuel filter is new about a year ago. Would adding a electric fuel pump before the plunger pump help? I have not seen any leaks.

Adding an electric pump wouldn't really help I'm afraid. It sounds vaguely like a bleeding issue to me. Slip the new filters off and make sure any sealing rings are completely clean and properly located, then try bleeding it down again.
Once you've bled it as far as the injector pump, hook it up to a good strong battery charger, get a friend to spin the engine on the starter and loosen the fuel pipe unions where they go onto the injectors one at a time. You should only need to loosen them for a couple of seconds each, just long enough to clear any remaining air and get a good strong clean flow of fuel.
If the problem persists then you may need to check all of the fuel system fittings to ensure that everything is spotlessly clean and properly sealed.
HTH.
Cheers, JV.
PS if it's fitted with a CAV injector pump, don't be too surprised if the problem comes back every now and again. They're a bit of a PITA for it. Always have been, always will be lol...

i have 500 series with bd 154 motor in it the main lift pump left side 0f engine was bad so just left it on changed line to go to in line fuel filter then into ele. fuel pump then in to main fule fliter works great.not more primimg or lack of fuel at pump after tractor set for a long time. also make changing filters a lot simpler

Likely there is a tiny leak in the leak-back from the injectors. Not enough to lose fuel but will slowly let air into the system when stood a couple of weeks.

If your machine has a pull stop make sure that you push it back when you stop the engine, then put the throttle on full that way the metering valve in the pump cannot stick in the stop position which they do,if you got an electric shutoff still put the throttle on full,I think also that you should service the fuel system, run the engine till its warmed up and has charged the battries, take the cover from the lift pump and clean it out,if you think the pump is leaking back remove the outlet pipe from the lift pump, with a piece of pliable hose held against the outlet and the other end in your mouth try to blow back,if you can the none return valve is leaking and could be losing prime, put in new fuel filter/s bleed the system, start by opening all the bleed screws, prime till clear fuel comes from the filter/s,close the bleed screw/s and prime on till clear fuel from the bottom bleeder on the pump, then finish with the top one,you may have to loosen the injector pipes a couple of turns to get the air out of the pipes as the CAV can be a SOB to bleed once air gets in so that is why I advise warming the engine up first, you need to make sure that all the glow plugs are working, fitting an eletric pump is a no with me,the factory setup is all that is required, the tank is higher than the pump so keep it filled up to expel moisture, make sure that the tank vent is free and not causing a vacuum drawing the fuel back.
Good luck.
AJ.

Thanks for all the advise. I will get it primed this weekend. I only have one lever on my throttle. I move it all the way down to kill the engine. I will start going back to full once the engine has stopped. THANK ALL OF YOU AGAIN!!
