Is there a method to removing the pins on the track chain. I tried hammering them out but that didn't work.

There are hydrolic track pin presses. Big equipment dealers should have one or know of one. You could also build one.

You need to removed on the master pine the spirol pin before pull out the master pine and you need to tighten the chaine and instaled the master link under the sprocket and with a sledge hammer and hammer pine it should be easy.
 
A good sledge and large punch will drive them out. Don't be afraid to heat the link halves before driving pin out. Leave the track pad bolted to the link that the pin is in.
