TEA20 restoration

I need to know the firing order for a TEA20. The serial number for my tractor is 300788. Also, I need to know how to get the shifter into the start position - do I lift up or push down on the knob... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Firing order is 1,3,4,2. The shifter on mine slides straight forwaed into the S position neither up nor down exactly the same as First and Third. Good luck and do post some before and after pics

Joe, On my TEA 20, an old one, I lift as I push forward towards 3rd gear. Its nowhere near S; it took me while to learn it, in fact it was my wife who showed me how to do it - just keep trying, feel confident and it will start once you get it right. Geoff

There is no special motion required for the starter. The system is a straight rail that only moves bak and forth and the bottom of the shifter is just a knob that interfaces with a brass receiver.

Move lever to right then push forward. If that does not work then, the switch may need replacement or adjusting. or the rails need attention. Very easy to work on.

The first picture is of the inside of the tractor (rotated 90 degrees.) On the left are the three shift rail ends. The top one, with the bar attached is the reverse/starter. When you move to the S position the bar will move the toggle that presses tha starter button.

The second picture is the aft end of the transmission case the shift rails end can be seen on the right side now. You can barely make out the shifter interface in the middle of the picture.

I have a TEA-20 parts tractor if you find you need anything.

The firing order is 1/3/4/2 the number one position is at the 10'clock position and don't forget that the Distributor runs Counter Clockwise not clockwise (a common mistake).
The position for the Starter is exactly forward of the reverse position, you push it straight forwards, the lever should be lifted to go sideways into the reverse/start position, but after a while this "step" on the selectors does get worn away, due to the operator just dragging the lever sideways. If you do this and it still doesn't work then it is the switch on top of the Clutch housing below the battery, that either requires adjusting, by slackening it off and pushing it forward or the switch requires replacing.....John

Thanks for all the help, guys. I will post some pictures when I get a chance. The tractor is over at my brother's, and I work on it on the weekends. Talk to you later! :-)
