tech at pulls

Went to a pull and weighed in my weight was okay then tech checks the # on engine block and says it not the engine # for that tractor .
Says if I finish in the top of the class will not be able to take prize but can pull for fun .
How do I know if he is right or wrong ????
So I pulled in my frist class and weighed after my pull ,and was told the same thing .
so I loaded up and came home.
when i bought this tractor was told it bone stock original,the tractor is a good puller.
So I was a little P Oed when this happend.
Got home and did my home work and the tractor HAS the right engine # for that tractor . I think i was singled out, not sure how to handle this.

if you are going to be a tech at a pull then i think you should know all there is about a tractor. just cause the numbers dont match there were replacement blocks for tractors back in the day. if i found out that my block was the orignial for the tractor i would let them know. i wouldnt go and spread it all over here but i would show the tech man what i found on that tractor.dont pick and chose on people just cause they win once or twice or you think they can out pull you. i have had that happen at a pull once but never went back.drove 100 miles to a pull to have them tell us that our weight brackets and hitch wasnt right but looked at our tractors and waited till we signed up to tell us. they were new tractors there and thought that our stock tractors would outpull there big cube tractors. and the bad thing was that some of the guys there pulled with us and we asked them about their rules and they said they was the same till we got their. im glad we dont have that problem down here where we pull.if there was money pulls then i could see that everyone be right down to the tee but for a trophy or ribbon. if you win you paying for trophy so why not just have fun.

Nilloc, by the sound of your story I believe that I know who you are, and what pull you were at. I am guessing that you were pulling in Ontario on Friday night. I was the guy at the scale. I hope that you will come back next year. Just so that you know, neither I nor the pull chairman will be involved with that pull next year. A whole new committee will be appointed.

Myself and the chairman have tried to make this pull better than when we took over 4 years ago. I think that it is, but there has been some controversy along the way. Some people like what we have done, but some long time club members have stopped coming out because of us. We are now stepping down and letting some new people take over, for better or worse.

If you want to discuss this particular event regarding your tractor, send me an email. Obviously there are some hard feelings, but I hope we can get past them.

Ditto Andy!!! Unfortunately, in my own hometown where the pull is a mile from my house, plus I'm one of the few who actually even has a farm and brings in some "stock" tractors " along with hotter ones for the hotter classes-I get bumped along with anyone who parks near me- cuz we have new paint. It's gotten very old to us. They won't even let us open inspection covers to prove they are correct because then they will look like the fools. All it took were a few crybabies several years ago who said if those 3 tractors pull they were going home. I said have a safe trip! instead I was not even allowed to hook-and I was a fricken sponsor! no more of that! What to do here? not sure-going camping instead I guess its an old boys club.

Our club has it's anual 3 day event nest weekend. I've been a member for going on 2 yrs. Never pulled as of yet. They have had some problems in the past that has lost many members attributed to pulling/rules etc. My plan is to weigh / pay / pull but NOT be eligible for points/prizes. That request will be in writing and handed to officials at registration. I only want to pull and get some baseline data and experience. I can't imagine anyone would have a problem with this. Tractors are stock and probably not overly competitive anyway. Ones got "new" paint and wrong carb and other has a set of "old style" tread tires that I've "sharpened" up a little to use plowing and such. They are not "pulling tractors" but just would like to see how they fare. You all may have heard of a new thing in pulling called "fun"?? I am a pretty competitive person , by nature, but like some of you I just don't need the BS at a pull and this is how I hope to avert it. It's just a fun/games/eat good weekend and the first one I've went to. Hope to enjoy it. Will let ya know how it turned out.

I guess we don't get too worried about a gleaner E block in a wc, a 450 block in an M or 201 in a Vac for that matter, speed limit sorts most of that out and we have classes for tractors that have transplanted engines. If I go to a pull that has some ridiculous rules like Milford tractor pullers stupid 27 inch drawbar rule I simply don't go back. We have 20 pulls in our area and I go to about half that, distance is not as big of a factor as to how well the pull is run. JD Plowboy are you the person who posted the P-51 Mustang flyby on Utube? It's awesome!

To Northpuller.No hard feelings at all, you hand job to to and this time I was on the other side of the fence.
Put in that situation you would be to,My beef was if I was not legal then you should have checked the other tractors in the pull yes there engine # would match but that would be it. And you know who they are.
My tractor was dynoed at 46pto hp and I pulled 150 feet out of 250 foot track, when i left.The other tractors were pulling 170 area . I have 6 cyl and the tractors at the top were 4 cyl.
I realize as techs we all have a tough job and you are not going to make some people happy.
You and I have been to many pulls in this area and no one pull is the same.I enjoy pulling I do it to have fun,my tractor is as stock as could be,I put a set of Denny bars on it for safty and and put a streight pipe on the exhuast. Thats it ! you know there are some guys that we pull with that cant say that.
I left that nite so I would not say something I would regret later this is were the 24 hour rule kicks in and it works. To north puller you can call me at home any time. Hope to see you at the BCHA show and by the way I will be the tech.

I find that if your not in the pulling club puttinf on the pull or friends with the shed operator click. Your not going to win. I'm there to have fun, visiting with my friends. My pulling tractor is a 1949 Farmall H 4600# class and I'm 99.9% stock. I was at a pull about 6 months ago, pulling agency the sled owner/ club member and we both pulled a full pull and had a pull off. He bet me and his tractor is about 40% stock and his motor cost him about $4000.00 and mine cost me $350.00 and where in div. II. I will not be going back with my 3 tractors and my friend with his 2 tractor will not be there also. I'm there to have fun and they are there to win a damn $5.00 trophy. I have never been tech or have never seen a tractor being tech at a pull before. I also have to agree with Andy, he has hit the nail on the head.

Sounds good. Doing that job seemed like a good idea at the time when it was offered. After 4 years, I have never had so much grief - not from you, but you know the type. I am taking a few weeks off from pulling for family time. My plan is to be at the BCHA pull for my next one.

Amen Andy. Our church almost was there quite a few years back, but we saw the light! so to speak. Last Saturday was the pull closest to me, and I couldn't go because I'm not welcome there.

would you go back if you would of won? did you get cheated ,just because he had a 4000 $ engine i pull a wc with a 300$ engine and put the hurt on a lot of high dollar tractors traction wins pulls not money

The sled owner also is a big donor to the pulling club and is a board member. So the sled owner and his operators are cheaters and if there friends are pulling. You'll never going to win. It was not only me they did it to, they do it in every class. You can tell if one of there friends was in the class. The last pullers would always win the class. When a tractor is moving good down the track and the sled comes to a hard stop and you then spin out and the class winners don't. The class winners beat you by 50 to 60 plus feet or the flag man just stops them after they have bet the non click group tractors. From 3100# classes to 7100# classes only at this pulling group pulls. I leave after the 7100# class. I bet they do it all the way till the end of the pulls. I see the same tractor winners at different pulls and they do not win there, only at there pull they can win. When a stock engine has 20 to 30 HP and they are coming out with there so call stock ( stroker motors ) 60 to 100 HP tractor cheating in the stock Div. 1 & Div. 2 class. But, I can beat them and the other lost to them can beat them bad at the other pulls, because the sled operators does not cheat. So to answer you.. If I was winning there, would I been going back. NO.. I can not deal with CHEATERS and cheating just to win a $5.00 First place prize.

not all the time. we go to a pull where they have a 4 mph speed limit in stock . i got a good pulling wd45 but when you got guys pulling oliver 66 and 77 and wc allis and can start off in 3rd gear and blow the horn and then slow down and pull it out the gate then that is not a stock engine. this is in the stock class also cause they dont pull a super class or modified.

I dont know where you guys are from but in southern il and MO and KY where i pull we dont seem to have these prolems.We go to pulls always seems to be frendly people they have there rules and diferent sleds and i have ALWAYS BEEN WELCOME AND HAD A GOOD TIME.Tires and speed limits are the best rules in that you can have.LEROY BRAVE

Unfortunately in wi. alot of pulls seem to be all about money money money. Do they not realize who puts on the show? A lot of the pulls only have a farm stock class im not stock im not trying to hide that i do not like competing against young men brought by there fathers straight from the farm that dont have weights, or simple things like an air gauge but you can use mine they came to pull and i dont care what it is its fun im hooked for three years i told my buddy four miles an hour even seven that just sounds boring well this winter i drove to ky and bought an oliver and like the guys down there told me shes a good little old tractor shes painted up nice and i named her the kentucky queen and i just love running it. But what i cant stand is how the rules are posted on the web and then when you get there the secret talks start and pretty soon the rules are being changed such as the speed limits to me that doesnt change much what we need is stock and improved stock that seems fair.

Dont take this as a direct reply to the last post but one directed to the topic in general. i would love to see actual techs that could pull a engine down mic and measure everything in it to ensure that in fact its stock and if it is then the guy who protest looses 1000 dollars to that gentleman to reassemble his engine. I think it would push alot of pullers out of the sport though . I have personally seen it done this way at the dirt tracks and drag strips for years .I just like to see a tech that can read a pump or specific gravity of fuel correctly at antique pull . I guess one should start small and work up to the tear down rule.

I agree measuring cubic inches by the volume of air is not that difficult. I was just stating that in order for it to grow in my area we cant just have stock classes we have to have improved classes i dont care what the speed limit is 3 4 7 it doesnt matter to me but im not stock and im not open class im improved and i agree with stock or close to stock pullers its not fair to compete against 6000 dollar motors which is where im at but if there are improved classes theres guys with ten to 14 thousand dollar motors that to me is serious

I went to a pull last weekend, national show and they have a pull there. It's alwayse fun as there's people there from all over the country to talk to and share intrests. So now I'm pulling in a couple classes with like tractors and engines built on similar blocks or engine family to start with. I was out displaced by a bunch, I'm over a hundred cubic inches short of some of the guys. That's right 100 cubic inches. Should I whine? Do I care? Would it do any good to measure them?

Answer is that I don't care, but I will tell how it panned out. I know what gear ratios are in different tractors for different gear selections, I know that I hooked in the fastest gear out of any of them and my engine turned faster than any of them. Doesn't take a rocket sicintist to figure out that the 1st place plaques rode home in my tool bag.


Go ahead and pump the cylinders, check the fuel, complain to me about haveing shiney parts or that this or that can't be done. I made my parts and I know what I've got. Complain about cost if you will, but being I'm handy I've spent about a whopping $1500 on my complete short block assembly......... want to see the break down of parts and machine work? Want to see what it looks like? Though I'd hate to guess what I've spent in the breathing assembly and in the time and reserch to make it come togather.

aint no bigger cheerleader in the sport than wi 50 fo himself. pulls outlaw class just like some of us others wich is the loosest rules in tractor pulling. since some say a 400 inch allis doesnt have enough air to support 400 inches what would it pump? after all cubic inches is trhe measurment of air a engine displaces.

I don't have nice legs and wear a skirt, I'm not much of a cheerleader. Though my head cheerleader Pankey is cross dressing, wearing a skirt and sitting by his computer chearing for a certain Allis. It's a pretty little Allis with shiney parts, a header he claims can't work and a cylinder head he claims doesn't exist.

On a serious note,
We're all lined up with the tractors and there's lots of people standing around looking at my tractor and asking various questions. There's people there from anywhere from WA to NC, MN, WI, Mo, OH and who knows where. We're talking and someone mentions Pankey, about 8 to 10 people bust out laughing, someone says something about an idiot and all just laugh and agree. I suppose it's fame, but it's not the kind of fame one would want.

I did go to a pull and participate. I even won a few classes. It's a strange phenominon but in order to win, one has to go pull. Though I go for fun, it's alright to do well also. I do wish the tractor would have ran better, I've developed a miss. Today I looked at the cap, found terrable carbon arcing and found the rotor to cap phasing to be off. Pin was gone holding the vac advance in position. No big deal, I turned the pickup a little and ran the distributer on the bench and checked allignment and locked things in place where they needed to be. Hopefully saturday night I'l' go run again.

If you really want some first place plaques from a national event though, for $200 I'd be glad to send them down. I've got a dozen or so around here from over the years in a tote in the basement

I'm glad I'm to busy to have much time for any of this crap. I posted a simple post and right away Pankey has a problem with it.

Good to meet you yesterday and thanks for bringing the tractors and ploughs so the kids could practice.
Best I could tell is the tech officials had an old incomplete copy of the tractor data and good intentions. Likely the info was documented when the new model was introduced. However data wasn't verified at the end of the production run of the same model.
Manufactures quietly make running changes all the time. In particular at end of a model's production. In preparation for the new model so less change on the production line is required. Saving time and money.
Deere updated cylinder heads at the tail end of 70 diesel production. Cams were changed at the tail end of 720 diesel production.
Better yet look at how many versions of 4020's there are.
