Tecumseh no spark

I have a Tecumseh HS40 motor with no spark. This motor came from a Toro snow blower (Model 421) I picked up at a garage sale. Probing around with a VOM reveals the two small diameter wires coming out of the coil have continuity. Can this be correct? I believe one goes to ground (on condenser mounting screw) and the other to the points. In advance thanks for any information.

You should have a circuit between these 2 wires, one lead is is a ground for primary & secondary windings in coil, other lead is opposite end of primary winding & goes to points.

Joe, I'm using a cheap VOM and the digital readout shows a dead short (000) when checking these wires. If I use a better meter should there be an Ohm reading that would indicate whether I need to replace the coil? At $40 a pop I'd like to know if this is my problem. Thank you for the quick response.

Before condeming coil, check that points clean & contacts not pitted/worn & that your getting a circut thru same when closed(disconnect condenser before testing)if points good replace condenser or replace points/condenser as a set,if still no spark with lead to kill/stop sw disconnected then coil is bad,as to actual resistance of primary/secondary tecumseh manual gives no resistance values of each, they say put coil in a coil tester & check, most mower shops have these & will check coil for you,if coil is bad,try going to ebay & type tecumseh coil in search, you may find a good used/new coil at a much lower price.

On a magneto coil you have TWO windings. One is between the wire that is grounded to the block and the wire that connects to the insulated side of the points. This winding WILL check near ZERO ohms. The other winding is between the wire grounded to the block and the spark plug wire. This winding will read in the 7000 to 10000 ( 7K to 10 K) ohm range.

Thank you for the replys. I still don't understand it but Joe I took your advice and saw sparky (mechanic/coil checker) at the local shop. He assured me that the coil was OK, the condenser was OK, and if I shined up the points with some emry cloth, I'd have spark. Well it happened. Nice blue spark. Now on to carburation (only runs with fuel injection- gas squirted in throat of carb). Again thank you all. This get help sight is the greatest.
P.S. I hope to put this gem on my 20" buzz saw. The 2hp B&S I have on it now is just a little under powered.
