Telehone problem

My phone quit working and I went to the interface outside and plugged a phone in, worked fine, closed the little door in the interface and called to my wife to try the house phone inside which now also worked fine. Went back in the house and phone no longer worked. Went back outside and pushed in on the little door which makes contact and my wife, inside the house, said the phones working. Got in the house and its no longer working. My question is how can I tighten this up so that it makes good contact for more than five minutes?

Anything beyond the interface box belongs to you in most cases but if the problem is with the interface box then, again in most cases, it's a phone company problem, not yours. I'd call them and tell them the problem your having and let them send someone out to check it. I've had problems at my interface box several times and it's never cost me a thing to have them fix it.

The problem is verizon won't come out for a week. They told us if we had to make a call just go outside and plug in the interface.

Ask Verizon if they are going to give you a credit for that week of Non-service. Then ask for the their manager.

The connector plug must be loose. Could be the tab that holds it in is broken or it is just loose. Push it in and put something on it to hold it in. (buble gum), tape, wire tie. Maybe stuff some paper between the door and the connector.

100% ditto what NC said.. usually from the customer access side and forward is your nickle.. IE.. fromthe little 3" stubby cord plugged into their jack.. however.. i to have had the box itself go badwhere the wire and jack met... telco had no qualms about replacing mine on a 5yr old house on their dime.

First unplug all of the phones inside the house including the computer phone line if present. Plug one phone in a jack inside the house and see if it works. If it does then try a second phone and so on until you find the problem phone.

Jim,you have some great suggestions here. Huntinggreen59 has a great idea also.

By chance is there any blackening in the connections of the demarcation box?

I ask because my SIL had lightning hit her demarc box and blew her connections, computer jacks in the house were black where they sparked.

The phone co. had to replace her demarc box and re-solder the braided ground of the underground cable. Just one more thing to look for.

I hope to be of help.

Just got my first interface box installed last year. You mean its gonna be trouble. Come and get it. Worked fine without it for 40 years.

I live in Pennsylvania.
Just last month our phone quit working after a rain storm. Called Verizon; they told me it would be 3 days until service; I blew my top! Made multiple calls with little sucess. I then called my state rep and service man was out the next day. Crew worked on Sat (ot) and I now have a direct line to an individual in Harrisburg if future problems come up. Verizon gave us one month credit!

(quoted from post at 17:01:46 07/08/08) My phone quit working and I went to the interface outside and plugged a phone in, worked fine, closed the little door in the interface and called to my wife to try the house phone inside which now also worked fine.
id sh actually make a call, or just check for dial tone? if one phone or modem is permanent (off hook), it will have dial tone for a little bit, then go into lock out.

As I understand it the problem with repair in some states is a union/Verizon issue (especially PA). According to my understanding, union rules limit the number of repair crews that can be assigned to weekend work. Verizon is reluctant to pay OT so I believe CWA put a limit on the number of crews that can be assigned weekend duty as a straight time day. I had Verizon give me the same story on a FIOS repair....and that"s what they told me. You can probably still get service if you yell loud enough or apply some leverage (as you did).

The “It will be a week” line is not because of the union. Where does a weekend come under waiting a week for repair?
As IH2444 said” Yeah, ain't deregulation wonderful”. This is the problem. The phone companies never were 24/7 on repairs but what with the companies competing, there are so many less workers.
Being reluctant to pay OT is BS. They are turning the screws real hard on OT not because of CWA but because of not wanting to pay out the money.
