Temp sender thread size in ' 61 FORD 2000 Head ?

Any one of you gents actually run into a thread size problem in the head where theOEM gauge bulb sender nut (the one that slides on the capillary tubing) is the same size as the head tap and the bushing that is supplied with a new replacement is toooo large ? The sliding nut is some special thread (anyone know what it is called) and for some reason the head is taped the same (no, there is no bushing or other fitting behind it on the tractor lol)...Another thought and question: is there any smaller type bulb that goes into some of the other brands of tractor ii.e. IH/Oliver that has a very small diameter buld that I may be able to use in it's place? The main problem/soluton as I see it for now is that if I can obtain a much smaller bulb tube then I can modify the old sliding nut to fit somehow and then have a tight seal? Any one have any thoughts on this ? Thanks for now ---JIM
 
i had the same problem with a 1973 ford 4000 diesel. the thread size was way too small for an aftermarket temp sender unit and i could not find one that would fit without buying a high dollar unit from the Ford-NH dealer. i finally used an aftermarket electric gauge and wired it into a off- on switch.
 
Yes Sir,

I've ran into that problem on IH tractors as well. That adaptor is a "wacky" thread size and only available thru the dealer.

Also on one tractor, I had to take a brass front disc caliper hydraulic washer off of a Ford truck, drop it into the adaptor to keep the capillary tube from going on thru.

Those things are a royal pain. :>(

Jim,The hole in the head is tapped 1/4" NPT.I don't what thread is on the nut that is installed behind the bulb.But i would think that a tractor dealer could get the bushing that you need to fit the head and accept the bulb and retainer.I ran into the same problem on a Super 55 Oliver recently.I just discarded the bushing sent with the new temp guage and reused the old bushing.If you can find one through a dealer you might find the correct one in an old block or head in a tractor or combine salvage yard.
 
Don't some of the Ford heads have threads right in the head, complete with a "ledge" at the bottom for the sensor to seal to, allowing the nut on the capillary to to screw directly into the head, with no adapter needed?
 
Bob,Your question got me to thinking so i went and looked at my 861 and a friends 641.And you are correct they are both screwed directly into the head without using the bushing.I'm sorry i posted the wrong information.I've installed several of these over the years and could have sworn that the Fords all used the bushing.I now stand corrected.Thanks Bob,I also looked at my Massey Ferguson and a couple of my Olivers and they used the bushing.So i guess having too many tractors and getting old makes it easy to get confused.
 
Bob: you may have hit on something that I have overlooked until now... When I first began the repairs on the sender and went to remove the nut that slides around the capillary tube i noticed right off that there was no bushing and I thought this strange as I purchased the new OEM sender/gauge asembly and noticed how the bulb sealed to the supplied bushing that came with it .... that led me to think of how in the world would the newer one seal if it did not have something to stop it/seal it... If there is a "ledge' in the tapped port then it will surely work without a bushing ! I will check this in the AM for sure, This tractor is new to me so that is part of the problem when one is not familar with owned equipment. If I understand all correctly, I will install the old broken off bulb in the head port and if it stops (hits this "ledge" ) then I'm in like Flynn with a replacement, and if it doesn't (goes in toooo far) then I'm back to the forums and drawing board.... thanks for now Gents--- JIM

Thanks for looking for me ! Although the problem isn't solved yet I'm glad you posted back with this info because the Guys on the FORD forum must have thought I was sipping tooooooooo much antifreeze when I posted it was installed in the head without a bushing and the size was not 1/4" npt or 3/8" npt but rather (as I have now discovered) 3/8" tube thread (jic/an- ) or just regular 5/8" - 18 NF thread instead.
