My 52 TEA has an aluminum hood, or bonnet. It is in pretty rough shape. I just picked up a used hood that is steel. When did they make the change? I assume the steel hood to be older.

Really... I would have figured it to be the other way around. My hood might have been replaced at one time I guess. My uncle backed into the one I have now (the aluminum one) and it is beyond repair. I picked up a steel one on Saturday for $100 bucks. Thanks.

My 1952 TEA had an aluminum bonnet (side pieces in steel). Now replaced with steel. I am told that they used the aluminum when steel was hard to get during the post-war re-construction of the English economy.

My 48 TE-20 has a steel hood and an aluminum "T"- piece.

The '55 TEA I have been parting out has a steel hood.

Since the aluminum bonnets are by far rarer than the steel ones, I'd not toss the old aluminum one away just yet, just in case it is repairable, and a collector needs it for a full restoration. Aluminum can be worked back into shape or sections formed and welded back in by someone who is good on an English Wheel and a tig welder.

They only fitted the aluminium hoods for a short period as they didn't have the steel, they were not strong enough and they soon started with the steel ones again. They did this in 1951/52/53 time, they also made fuel tanks as well and auxiliary fuel tanks on the diesels....John
