testing gages

Temp guage can be tested easy just put the sender in boiling hot water or cold water then heat the water and watch the guage to see if it moves as the water gets warmed. I use a guage with probe that reads in degrees in the same water as the sender. Remove the sender for the fuel guage apply voltage then move the float arm and watch for the guage to move.
 
Depends on type of electrical movement in the gauge.

Here is a link to basic tests, not the greatest, they are not going to tell you everything, but better than nothing.

If your going to range an electrical gauge by pulling the sender, per Gene's post, you need to ground the sender body common to the gauge ground to complete the circuit.
