testing torque amplifier

Hello purchased a center section from a Farmall 400 that was destined for scrap. I there a way to test the TA as it sets? figured for the money I would at least learn how it comes apart before I tackle the one in the SMTA. Oil was clean and constant mesh gear looks good and bearing feels tight. Thanks, Mike

Out of a tractor they are a bit difficult to test, but here are my thoughts. The ramp and rollers are easy to replace so assume they are bad. The TA clutch is easily looked at to see if it is worn. It looks like a standard dry clutch and if it has a lot of meat left on it I would use it. (someone may chime in with the new thickness. I would replace the throwout bearing just because they are used at all times the TA is pulled back, and thus are a wear point. If you have very good sense of bearing condition, choose your own replacement standards.
The internal gears should be nice and quiet with no bearing or shaft wear. Common practice for a planetary gear set is to look for tooth and bearing wear. Kevin Meier has components and advice. Jim

I have a 350 utility. The TA doesn't work. Is it usually one part that goes out on these or what is the common problem with them ? Thanks

rule of thumb is, if it works on high side but slips on low side(lever pulled back) it is a problem with ramp and rollers. If it works on low side but not high side it is problem with TA clutch.

if the ramps and rollers are good you shouldnt be able to spin the input shaft backwards are you??? for some reason thats stuck in my head

My 350U has the original TA and is still strong. 90% of the problems are under using it (leaving it in direct) or slowly moving the lever (very not good, shift into Low by jerking the lever back, and release the lever forward to go to direct so your hand just whips forward!!)
If the trans fluid is kept good, and theadjustment is Ok, the most prone failure is the ramp and rollers. Sprague type replacements are available,
Jim

That is a factor, but most one way clutches will hold hand pressure all day. put 300 ft# on it and it slips as though gone. In the tractor easy to test, out of tractor requires some way to put force on the TA housing, and (difficult) some way to hold the one way clutch. then put engine level torque on it in the rearward direction. Jim

It"s easier to remove the ta to test. Clamp the cast in the vise and makes sure the carrier locks up counter clockwise and turns free clockwise. You should also split the ta with a couple screwdrivers and inspect the ramp and rollers for flat spots and look at the carrier for roller tracks. The top end of the carrier sbould also have a good oil seal surface.
