Well, I bypassed the resistor and that think didnt turn over twice before firing up! Now it runs strong but says its not charging and the longer the tractor runs the lower oil pressure goes. It seems like its charging, if I disconnect the battery while running it stays running. Faulty gauges? Bad ground?

When you post a question, it is always nice to let us know if the tractor is 6v or 12v, front or side distributor & if it is a 2,9 or 8N or something else.

Yea, when it gets hot, oil pressure goes down. After it is hot, and the engine is idleing, anything above 5 lbs is good pressure. What weight oil are you using? Pick the weight of the oil by the condition of the engine (oil pressure) & the outside temperature. Many folks use 30w detergent all year. A worn engine with multi-vis oil may lose it's oil pump prime if it sets a while. Many use 10w30 or 40. Some like the newer diesel rated oil because of the additives for the flat tappets. (I'm not convinced that my 2400 rpm N engine needs the same oil as my 65 Mustang did) Anyway, IMHO, use a detergent oil. Increase the weight if the engine has low oil pressure. If it gets infrequent use, stick w/ straight weight.

The best way to see if it is charging & you suspect you ammeter of being defective is to use a multi-meter to check the generator output. The analog meters are $15 at WallyWorld. Before you do anything else to the charging circuit, polarize it; see tip # 23, below for info on doing that.

Post back w/ the results; lots of folks here can help you get it running right!

Chilly.........thanks fer follow-up. Disconnecting the battery while running is NOT a good thing. It has blown more squarecan voltage regulators than it has fixxed.

Iff'n you think you have chargin' problems, gitta el-cheapo ANALOG voltmeter; $15 from most enny hardware or autoparts store. Good and necessary thing to have for old tractor electrics. DO NOT gitt a digital meter!!! It don't like sparkies & genny brushes and will giff'ya flakey all-over the place digits readings. (its a technical thing, trust me)

Iff'n you don't think yer 6v genny is charging, you can ALWAYS re-POLARIZE it. Just "arc-spark" yer side-by-side BATT & ARMM terminals on yer squarecan voltage regulator. I use a stubby wideblade screwdriver; you can use barbed'wire or bailin'wire iff'n you want. You can re-polarize as many times as it takes to make you feel fuzzy and charged, won't hurt 'nuttin'.

Go ahead and re-polarize yer OEM 6v POSITIVE grounded battery. Iff'n its negative grounded, you'll loose upto 40% of yer sparkies, but thats a different problem and eazily fixxed. It is ALWAYS good to re-polarize ennytime you disconnect yer battery. As I said, won't hurt 'nuttin' to over re-polarize........Dell

Dell......seems like the BEAR findings is NOW makin' me secure an "unlisted land phone NUMBER".

I definately be outta the BOOK tomorrow in early AM.

Also, KPNS.

John, too many "cell" kids!!!!!!!!!!!
