The addiction continues.

How do I explain to my wife that I need a fifth N? There is a rusting hulk in a field not three miles away that I just "GOT TO HAVE". She won't listen. Advise appreciated.

Why not tell her by buying that would be cheaper than buying parts that are needed for the other one's you own. Then of course be really slow about dismantling the tractor, a few months later decide it is too good to dismantle.

Bob;

Women have this nurturing thing, they need to care for and be a “mother” to all they come in contact with. Take the wife down to where the tractor sits in the field, bring a picnic basket and flowers, wine etc. Have a nice lunch and talk to the tractor as if it were a sick friend, give it a name, talk about all of the past good times it has had; moving dirt, sowing the fields, harvesting crops for the hard working farmer it belonged to, and about how all those times are now merely a memory to be cherished. Shed a tear if you can. Never even suggest that you want it. You see women also want to be in charge and think they have all of the really good ideas. Let her come up with the notion that her new friend (the tractor) needs to be loved once again. It may not happen when you are there with it, but as she thinks about how emotional you are about helping the poor neglected little “N” she will sense that she is helping both you and the “N”.

You asked:
"How do I explain to my wife that I need a fifth N?"

My answer: Very carefully. I tried the old, "how many more pairs of pants/shoes do you need?" It was quickly pointed out that the cost of all the clothing items she buys in an entire year didn't even come close to the cost of another tractor. I still only have one tractor.

You could also try, "I don't have to explain myself to you, woman - now get back in the house!" I don't know how partial you are to your kneecaps, though.

I have a friend that snuck home a couple of farmall Hs and hid 'em behind the shed. By the time she saw 'em the check had cleared and it was too late to take 'em back.

Remember: It's always easier to ask for forgiveness than permission. :D

i told my girl that i need 12 tractors one for every month so i could make a calendar to sell and make my first million dollars so far i'm up to nine good luck

Tell her the family is really poor & the small amount you're paying for it would be such a great relief to them.
You're doing it more for them than yourself, that's just the kind of person you are, & you would appreciate her to be also since you love her so much. (Never hurts to shed a little tear along about now)

But if that don't work I'll put you up in the shed til you're able to walk again.

Now Y'all can't be using the line " want it for parts". This is mine to my wife--started with only "1" red one, now up to 15 "extra parts " tractors! Good luck Y'all, Ed

Why should you have to justify getting another tractor when it is common knowldge that everyone NEEDS a minimum of one tractor for each acre - or portion of an acre - that he owns? I think that it is clearly stated in the bill of rights (or maybe the bill of lefts) anyway go for it!

I got my second N when the wife said she wanted an herb garden; I explained it would take a tractor w/ a bucket to make one. Hey, it worked for me!

Other suggestions include:

1. The one tractor per acre rule.
2. The one tractor for every implement rule.
3. The one tractor for each bay in your pole barn rule.
4. The "I can sell one part & recoup my cost & keep the rest for spares" line.

It's actually a piece of American Farming History that you need to do what you can to preserve. In a few years it will surely be worth a small fortune and you'll both be very rich when you sell it...........yeah, that's the ticket!! I sold a couple of mine for more than I had invested in them(can't really say that I made money but I didn't lose my a** either) and now I'm up to six at my place. She's kinda getting twitchy when she hears the word tractor so I better finish up a couple and sell them before I haul more home. grin

Oh Man, you're good!! I'll bet you could get away with a dozen tractors.......er....uh tractor friends that need to be loved again........ROFLMAO!!

Tell her that you'll restore it, sell it, and give her the profit. Then hope she has a short memory! If not, then you'll at least have the pleasure of restoring another.

#1 buy it, and sneek it home, park it next to the others and it becomes "one of those tractors"
it works with guns after so many she refers to them as "all those guns" not the 10 ,or 50 or the rifles its "all those guns" Ns same thing
#2 buy it have your buddy drive it over to your place, toss you the key and say THANK YOU AND YOUR WIFE FOR LETTING ME BORROW ONE OF YOUR TRACTORS.if she doesnt fall for it you spend a few nights in the barn with your new prize, and thats ok to

I really got a kick out of many of the answers...(at least one was exceptional)

After 4 x-wives, getting married 5 times, and divorced 6 times, I have been living with my current Ole Lady for 15 years now, GA no longer recognizes "common-law".. She had 9 kids all minors when we hooked up 15 years ago, all of them are grown and now we have grand kids that we raise...

Anyhow, she is a very good Ole Lady, the only one I have ever had that was close to my age, she is 4 months older than me, the others were years younger.

Whatever I think, is great with her.

Before her my record was 7 years.

I had one 3 day marriage, and one 2 month marriage.

To explain the numbers, I married the first one, and divorced her, around 17 years old, then remarried and divorced her again (wife 1, 2 marriages and 2 divorces), then I married another one, we divorced, then we lived together for a couple of years again (GA recognized common law then)(wife 2, one marriage, 2 divorces) got divorced again, then I married another one, divorced, and then married another one and divorced.

Well that's the short story....

Tried many of the same=had some luck.I explained the right tractor for the right job=after 5 she stopped asking me to do any yard work. Now they just became a part of the Yard=She likes when there all painted. She doesn't seem to give me a hard time anymore=I guess I'm lucky.I believe she also knows it is a waste of breath to tell me No.When she gets adament I will sell one and then within a month I have 2 more.We married very young right out of school it has been over 16 years now so she made it through my drinking years.I guess she figures if she only has to put up with tractors she is Lucky.I recently thinned out two n"s so it is time to rebuild the collection

If all else fails, just send the address to me; I need a parts tractor. Tenn would be too far to take it back. LOL good luck

The problem is you keep the tractors at the place you live. Me, I keep them 240 miles away. I have three now but she still thinks I only have two. The last, an 851, I bought about 4 months ago. When I sell my 1946 2N I will tell her about the 851. Last time she was to the property with me was in 1999. She complains a little bit but it usually doesn"t last long.

Tell her you bought it.
See how bad the reaction is.
If not too bad, go buy it.
If the reaction is terrible,
tell her you were just joking around.
It works for me...

Got to test the water, some times.

Buy your mania toy; tell her you have it, it just needing to pick it up.
Do not go pick it up on the hottest or coldest day of the year or on the week end you two go site seeing, were going to visit her relatives’ or … . because something like this will happen to you.
Last year I bought a tractor off ebay which I really needed (for now it is yard art) and used the weekend we go to our property were we raise cactus (not much up keep there). I keep my trailer at the property (250mi. away) and had to go get it to pick up the tractor in the Mojave Desert. This was the hottest day of the year and my work truck has no air except for the wind wing.
To make a longer story shorter; we go get the trailer in Az. drive back to the Mojave Desert by Edwards Air Force Base and pick up this beauty (??), not a spot on it has any paint left. The guys at the salvage yard bring it out with a forklift and put on my trailer (she was under the assumption it ran). There is a car crusher in the front yard of this outback home business. She states under her breath, wonder why they did not crush this
I hadn’t drank as much water or Gatorade as it usually do and needed to cinch down this new tractor. Before I knew it I was about to pass out from heat exhaustion and sat in the truck downing water and Gatorade. She for some reason is not helping as usual I have to get the guys at the yard to finish tie the tractor down and away we go. (she I find out later was so p…….off that she was going to let me go for a ride in an ambulance and give the new toy back to the yard and have it crushed, however Gatorade saved it)

Now the ending to this meandering story is; she did not talk to me all the rest of the week end ohh we communicated but not talk. So we get home, here in southern cal. and I go to my computer room and go to this site and find …. On the general talk site .. …. Free tractor in the high desert! You guessed it, off I go back to pick up the trailer with a lot of iced Gatorade. She is so happy she is without words.
So go get your new tractor.

You guys are great. Thanks for the advise. Some is more dangerous than others, and I can tell ya'll all have lots of experience with women, some more than others.

My friend Walter has two more than his wife knows about. He keeps them down on a lower part of his farm where he has convinced her a large colony of snakes reside down there which effectively keeps her away.
