The local ford tractor guru says I am nuts for putting a stat in my 2N, The problem is that he patches and pedals and I plan on working the heck out of mine, so I took all of you guys advice and I am going to put one in. I found a stat for a Mercury after going through Oreillys parts books. It is 192 degree, but I think I will drill a quarter inch hole in it for bypass and bleeding air, what do you all think is this a good idea or should I go with an eighth inch hole as usual? Another stat that will work in our tractors I believe is out of a Renault, but that was a special order from O'reillys.

You certainly DON"T need a 1/4" hole!

It's not all that difficult to get the correct 160* t-stat. This site has them, as does CNH along w/ plenty of other places. I'm pretty sure nnalert's carries both the 160 & 180 t-stats. And no hole drilling.

Those guys that designed and built these engines were pretty smart for their day (and would be now, rest their souls!). I think you're money ahead to use the thermostats made for them. On a related note, sometimes think back to the general technology available and in use in 1969..., cars, microwaves, calculators, etc., and think of the lunar landings occurring with mostly good success in those and subsequent years.

No need to go threw all that work. just get the correct one and put it into some hot water to make sure it opens up and is working before you put it in. Some people don't like putting them in but it is always best for an engine to get up to temp as fast as it can.

The reason that I do not put in a stat made for my tractor is $26 difference......but again thats just me! I hate giving my money to china or japan, rather spend it on other things.

If you have a TSC or such type farm and home place you might check what they have the the price they have. I know I shop around a lot when it comes to parts

The air bleed hole runs 3/16.The last Ford that ran without a thermo stat was the Model A 1928 to 1932.Friends and I had a Model A boil over when we used to run a cordwood saw in December.I put a thermostat in the hose, the boiling stopped.Titewads who run with out a thermostat are not wrapped too tight.The tractor will run better and sludge making will stop.Low oil temperatures make acids that etch bearings and stick top rings.

The right thermostat has a sleeve on it to locate it in the top hose.

Ive talked with fellows who had Model A powered cordwood saws and a saw mill.All told me you had to use a thermostat or boil.I sawed wood with Joe Ribero when he was in his 80s with his Model A powered saw.This was in the early 60s.I have posted this information on the old Ford Barn forum.Got jumped on by experts.All said I didnt know what I was talking about.I was there and saw the thermostat fix the boil over problem.I used a thermostat that fit in the top hoses of the 32 to 36 Ford v8.That thermostat is too large to fit in the Ford tractor.

Rock Auto sells the Renault thermostat for 8.89.No need to pay 26 bucks for a thermostat.Ive bought truck parts from Rock Auto, fast delivery, low prices.

I had a 71 ford torino...took the thermostat out in the summer, dayum thing ran hotter....then I learned a vauable science!

I bought the correct thermostat for my 9N at Tractor Supply Co. Package said made in USA and it cost under $20. They are the correct 160 degree units and won't require any drilling or cobbing.
