Thread cutting & drilling lubricant

Almost embarrassed to say the dregs from 5 gallon buckets of motor and hydraulic oil gets put into squeeze bottles to and gets used for a lot of this stuff....but I don't do much of it.

I, for one, am not embarrassed to admit that the same sources are used as chain and bar oil by me. Even clean-ish drained gear reducer oil is fair game for saw chain oil.

Any oil is better than No oil.
I do as Fred W.and watthour say.
I have several pump type oil cans around the shop. I drain the dregs of whatever bottles, jugs or pails I buy into a 2 gal jug and refill them from that. It's a mix of 10W30, , 15W40, ATF, PSF, tractor hyd fluid, Vactra, even bar and chain oil and refill them from that.
I call it Kikapoo Joy Juice.
Anybody else remember that stuff?

maybe i am missing somthing here but put motor oil in your engine so you dont cut the crankshaft in half so why would that be so great for cutting and drilling . you sure wouldnt fill your cars crankcase with cutting oil

Cooling but water would cool more if that is all you have at the time. Cutting oil keeps a drill sharp longer by keeping from getting it as hot. The drill gets hot which makes it dull and slowly stops cutting. Have you heard the term keep your tool cool?

for years we used some blue stuff that was invented at boeing. at least thats what the tooling salesman that called on the shop told us. made from some kinda leaf from south america or something. the salesman retired and no one took his place, too bad. we bought a lot of the stuff. it worked pretty good, especially since all the good stuff has been outlawed.

It is called, appropriately, "Boelube".
