Threaded Post Issue on Farmall H Starter

Not exactly sure what its called so I have attached a picture. Tractor only turns over when i hold the cable at the perfect angle. I noticed that this threaded post at the starter is loose and will not tighten up as the threads are pretty tore up. My first question is, will I have to remove the entire starter to remove this threaded post to replace it? How much more is there to it than that? Secondly, where can I find a replacement threaded post for this Farmall H starter? Thanks guys...

I believe you will find the threaded stud is soldered to the winding leads inside the starter and there is an insulator where it passes through the starter case. Likely both need to be replaced. The brushes and springs may need replacement, and the armature may need turning. The starter will be off the tractor and open to replace the stud, so do it right. You may want to find a shop that repairs starters and generators to do it for you, they will have the parts and tooling to do it.

A quick (not perfect) fix would be to remove one battery terminal to avoid sparking issues. Then carefully remove the nut in the photo without stripping the upper threads. Then clean everything with a wire brush to nice and shiny. Then use copper washers and a new copper nut. Put the cleaned battery cable back on the cleaned stud, followed by 2 or 3 washers, then the new nut. Do not over tighten copper! Hold the nut under the cable with a wrench to keep it from turning. Sometimes that nut is thin and needs a thin wrench. If the stud turns, the connection inside will fail. Jim

I appreciate the advice, however, when i grab the top of the post with 2 fingers, i can wiggle it back and forth and both of the nuts are tightend to the terminal. Does this mean the post is most likely broke off down in the starter and only makes connection intermittently?

Yes. that information is definitive. That starter is likely a better starter than any aftermarket starter. Have it fixed. Finding a competent electrical shop can be tough. Reds Autoelectric here in St. Cloud MN is wonderful.

I would say it is broken loose or at least such that as you experienced a poor connection. As Jim E said you need to fix it right at this time . Have a starter shop go over it. they will have it a part to do the stud anyway. When done will be a better starter than you will get from these rebuilt places on line. Might cost a bit more but will serve you better in the long run.

Thank you guys, I appreciate it!
