Timing for an 860 Ford Tractor

Can someone please tell me where the timing marks are on a 1956 Ford model 860 tractor? The manual says by the bell housing but I can not seem to find the area they are referring to, Thanks

RT:

The timing marks on the 172 CI engine in your 860 are on the flywheel. The inspection hole is in the bell housing beneath the hydraulic pump. It is covered with a small sheet metal cover held in place with a single bolt unless the cover has been previously removed and not replaced.

The timing marks can be hard to see even with a good timing light. If your tractor is 6V use a separate battery to power your timing light from 12V.

You may need to clean the flywheel in order to find the marks. I use a small paint brush and gasoline with the engine running to clean the flywheel. Once clean, it helps to find the 4 degree BTDC mark and mark it with white paint or chalk.

Good luck.

The marks are not on the flat of the flywheel where you think they outa be, but on the little step in the metal on the flywheel. I wound up takin' the starter off & then slapped myself on the forehead, could see them plain as day then. You gotta turn the flywheel to the right place to see them though.

I just had the same problem on my 860. The marks are hard to see for sure.

Thanks for the tip on the 12V timing light. I'll give that a try.
