Timing w/ timing light

After the tractor is warmed up check the idle. If it is idling at
400 rpms then remove the timing plug and hook up the timing
light. Check the timing marks on the flywheel with the mark on
the side of the hole. If it is a TO-20 it should be 7 degrees. If it
is a TO-30 it should be 6 degrees. Then check the timing at
1000 rpms. A TO-20 should be 21 degrees and a TO-30
should be 16 degrees. At 2000 rpms the TO-20 should have
31 degrees and a TO-30 should have 32 degrees.

Static timing is one method .
Remove the Dist. cap . Gap your points to the specs. Remove the number 1 spark plug . Hold finger over plug hole , and rotate crank in the direction that it normally turns . Note in what direction the rotor turns . When you rotate crank , you will be able to tell when you are on the compression stroke . As you come to the top of the compression stroke , you will see the timing mark on the flywheel come into alignment with the timing mark on the hole at the back of the engine near the starter . Align the timing marks . Loosen the bolt that holds the dist in place . Keep this bolt snug .Turn on the ignition switch . Turn the dist. in the direction that the rotor turns , until the points are closed . Now , turn the dist. in the opposite direction until you hear the snap that will be a spark when the points start to open . Retighten the bolt that holds the dist. . At this point , your timing is right on .
Mark where your dist. was set before you start . This will give you a reference to go back to if you foul up real bad .
You will want to move the dist. to close the points , and open tham several times just to get it as close as possible .
This is one nice characteristic of the old point system . You don't need any fancy tools .
Another good tool is a vaccuum guage . They are cheap . Buy one , and read the directions for setting the timing . Real easy .
Good Luck
