On the '51 8n where are the timing marks located, on the crank pully shaft or somewhere else. Should the dist be set any degrees before #1 TDC?

Marks are on the flywheel. The timing hole should be covered by a tear-drop shaped cover held in place w/ a screw.

No manual, huh? Check out tip # 39; a set on manuals will save you a lot of time & frustration.

Set the points at .025. Scribe the marks on the flywheel (I use white paint but a Sharpie works) Then, check the timing. At 400 rpm (idle) it's 4* BTDC, 9-11* at 1200 rpm & 16-18* at 2000 rpm.

Ok guys thanks, I have located the flywheel numbers and discovered that I am indeed 180 out on my firing order at 0* on the flywheel. Still don't know how my dumb self did that but anyway. So am I understanding you to say that I need to be on the 4* mark on the flywheel at the number 1 firing position on the dist? (by adjusting the dist rotation retainer.)

Ric:

Be advised that you will likely find two sets of timing marks on the flywheel 180 degrees out of phase with each other. Make sure that you are looking at the correct marks.

As Dean pointed out, there are 2 sets of timing marks on the flywheel. To ensure you're using the correct marks, pull number one spark plug and crank the engine over until you feel the compression stroke on cylinder number one, then look for your timing mark on the flywheel.

I'd mark the flywheel with a white paint pen to save you this trouble next time.

Number one on the distributor cap was originally set up with the rotor pointing to the right front corner of the cylinder head. You can set it any where you want to but that is where most people will look for number one when troubleshooting an ignition problem.
