tire chains

I"m getting ready to move from a place with a small blacktop drive to a place with a long gravel drive that has a good bit of slope to it. I know I"m gonna need tire chains for the NAA to plow snow.

Does anyone have a good reference for a place to purchase tire chains?? I have found several places on-line. I figure that several people on here would have a preferred vendor that has done them well in the past.

I"ll now have 22 acres to maintain with the tractor instead of just one acre. I"m really looking forward to it. But, at the same time, it"s going to be a lot more work. I"m ready for it though, I barely get the tractor up to operating temp by the time the current garden is worked over. I"m hoping to put out a few acres of crops with the tractor next year.

I"m sure this will lead to more posts in the future as I get the place whipped into shape.

I have always scabbed together old chains to work on my tractors when I needed tire chains, in fact the set I have now are two sets of dual truck chains put together to be long enough for 18.4-34 tires. I have seen several ads in the Fastline magazine for new tire chains, but never bought any. I'd lean toward the logging industry for this as they use them all the time on skidders. I have been to many equipment auctions where a huge pile of tire chains goes for a dollar or two, but I never wanted the hassle and didn't buy any. You might find a set used and for short money make them fit your tractor. Worn out skidder chains would probably give you all the traction you need too if you can get your hands on a set, probably at scrap metal prices. Good luck on your new 22 acres.

I've been mulling chains myself - I prefer (conceptually, and having had some experience with ladder-type chains not working as well as I like - though they beat nothing) one of the styles with chain running lengthwise on the face of the tire, or the skidder chain with heavy ring lugs (which will destroy blacktop - one reason they are not used more often out of the woods). I haven't yet actually gotten any of these fancier chains.

The fact that those end up double or triple the price of basic ladder chains gives me pause. Finding used ones would be good, given that I'm not going to put extensive wear on them. On the other hand, used ones are mostly going to be worn to the point where the original owner figures they are useless.

Keep an eye on Craigslist. Use the search box and type chains. And if you can make do for the rest of this year and wait till summer you will save a lot of money because NOW is the time they are in demand.
I see them all the time on CL here for $75 - $150.
I found a set of 13.6X28 X style double ring chains for a friend of mine last summer for $50 on CL. Seller was just wanting them gone.

I've bought tractor tire chaing from Gemplers twice and been satisfied both times. I've also heard good things about tirechains.com but have no first hand experience.

These guys ship out of PA. Just bought a set of double ring chains for a customer. They arrived today and look good.

You'll have a choice of at least three different styles: ladder, "duo-grip" and double ring. Go with either duo-grip or double ring.

RickB has the answer. at a very reasonable price. I paid more than that 20 years ago for a set for my Ford8N. Double ring chains or the Duo-grip is what you want. You only need to get stuck once and you will wish you had spent the money instead of looking for a cheaper price
