Tisco Trouble

Once again, another problem with GM alt conversion. I got the Tisco pulley #98NAA5825 pulley with 5/8 groove and it is not enough inset for me to get the nut on, if you know what I mean. There is a sleeve/spacer, then the fan, then the pulley goes on, then a washer and finally the nut. But not enough threads due to the pulley not having any "dish" to it. Hard to explain but you guys out there are used to this stuff, and I hope someone has figured this out in the past. Thanks in advance. Phippsburgh

If I were to remove the alternator fan and shorten the spacer that fits behind the fan, I could probably line things up, but then I'd have no fan for the Alt.. I don't know if that would matter or not, in the winter. Hmmmmm

Get somebody with a lathe to deepen the counterbore a bit for you. That's the way it is, nowadays, buy the parts, then modify them to fit.

It actually seems to be a well machined and heavy piece, so your idea had crossed my mind, I wish my machinist buddy was not 900 miles away!

Yer problem is with the spacers,,, best i remember theirs 2 of'em,,, one under the fan and one on top,,, their also mite B 2 different lengths of spacers,,, if I git time in the morning i will check,,, its not the counter sunk hole in the pulley I would bet on that....

I took a quick look,,, all I have rite now to check is the later alts that used a plastic fan,,, I had no problem put'n the TISC pulley on BUT I did have to come up with the rite spacer combination,,, I have 4 different spacers to choose from,,, .180,,,,.210,,,,,.280,,,,.400

I would check what ya got and git the others from a alt rebuild shop,,, 2 of the 4 spacers combinations will git it to fit rite,,, different pulleys and fan combinations use different spacer set ups,,, that the way it izz,,, I do have a tractor on the trailer I pulled in today that has the wrong pulley and a store bought 12V conversion alt on it,,, I will let ya know the combination I use on it sometime first of the week

I can use the .400 with the .180 thats the only combination I can use with the .400

I can mix and match the other 3,,, A .180 would B nice to have

I was even thinking about finding out if I could get a GM rebuilt that is set up for a double pulley just to get the length on the shaft that I need

You need one,,, thats what the .180 spacer is for,,, spacer under the fan needs to B the .210 or .280 and not the .400,,, if the tractor I hauled in would start I would do a quick check,,, he's in the same boat you are in,,, wrong pulley and wrong belt,,, gonna B gone most of the day,,, holler back at Bob he knows his Alts,,, the spacers mite have slipped his mine,,, adding/removing/swap'in spacers is sum'in we do and don't give it any mind,,, you have to match'em up to the pulley combination,,, most of the time we are not swap'in out pulleys and the ones that came on the alt are find to use with the pulley thats already on it,,, some pulleys don't need a spacer the spacer is made on the pulley

Canged the one I had out 2 day,,, .210 under the fan and .180 (mite B a .160) on top of the fan,,, TISCO pulley lock washer and nut,,, prefict fit

Thanks, are you talking decimals of one inch in these sizes? It is a nice steel, well made pulley, I sure want it to last me the rest of my life!, Phipps

Yes decimals,,, thousandths of a inch,,, I spec the pulley that was on the alt had the spacer made on to the back side,,, thats why you only have one under the fan,,, least thats the way this one was,,, gotta make a run to the alt repair shop my self,,, my stash has run out of the small spacers,,, worst case you can use two .210 spacers,,, it will move the pulley out .050 or so

Actually the NAPA rebuild's pulley was dished on both sides )( , and the fan itself is a bit convex ( to the threaded side of the shaft. I found a couple Altenator shops in Grand Jct. Colo. which is as close as I can get. I will try to find the right combo. there. Thanks, HOBO!
