if jerry /mt is out there. on our dicussion about my to 30 about the attachments keep falling. i pulled the side cover off and ran tractor i lifted my grader box and i seen it was leaking out the ram cylinder. is this a major problem? or can it be fixed rather easy? i do have an ferguson shop manuel and was reading a little on it. are p arts available? or can u tell me what part is leaking in the ram cylinder? any help would be appreciated.

I'm sure Jerry will come on and give you great advice. As you may know by now since you are reading a manual, you have to disconnect the control arm by reaching thru the port before you try to lift the cover. Be sure to follow the proper procedure. The cover is heavy but one man can take it off carefully. It really takes two to put it back easily unless you use a lift. You will want a new gasket for the cover. Parts for the cylinder are available from various sources including the MF dealers.

As phil(VA) pointed out, read the manual and follow the directions. This isn"t an F-22 so don"t be afraid to tackle the job. There"s lots of advice available on this forum if you have a problem. So come back and ask questions if you aren"t sure. I may not have the answer but someone else will. Some times there are several posibilities and you may try several different things before you find out what works in your particular case. That"s the thing about these old machines. Because of age and wear, the common failure modes and trouble shooting don"t always apply. But the folks on this forum have collectively seen a lot and the odds of someone having seen a case like yours are high. Then again, you may have a text book case that"s straight forward. You just never know with old equipment.

Yes,the parts are avaiable on this site or from an Agco/MF dealer and elseware on the web.

Until you pull the lift cover, you won"t know if it"a the lift piston"s ring or a scored cylinder or both.

Before you take it apart make sure the verticle tube in the front of the hydraulic compartment isn"t leaking because you only want to pull the lift cover once. Check that before you pull the pump cuz you can"t check it with the lift cover off unless it"s clearly a damaged o-ring or gasket.

When you get the parts, I believe there is an o-ring that seals the top of this tube so when you get the lift cover gasket get the o-ring too. You"ll also need a gasket for the lift cylinder if you have to remove it.

If the lift cylinder is leaking out of the rear end then it will usually be the rings on the piston (3) but you could find that the cylinder and/or the piston is also marked and requires replacing. If it has been changed before you may have a piston with a rubber seal fitted. If it leaks at the front of the lift cylinder it will be the "O" ring under the Cylinder. Either way you will need to remove the Top Lift Cover. Make sure that you carefully disconnect the Control Fork from the Control Valve in the bottom. There will usually be a "bridge" piece between the Forks and you will need to remove it, one screw either side. You then need to spread the Fork without damaging the Control Valve, once you spread the Fork CAREFULLY you will be able to un-hook the Fork from the Control Valve. Unbolt the Top Cover and lift it off.(HEAVY) You must fit a new gasket to the Top Cover don't attempt to use sealer except around the pressure pipe. While you have the top cover off you should consider changing the Safety Valve while its easy to see, it can leak and that can cause the implements to drop as well, even if everything else is OK. The Safety Valve is two valves in one and has a Check Valve on the end which is the one that will wear most; and that should be changed regularly; as it is in use all the time the Hydraulics are running, the Safety Valve only operates when overloaded, unfortunately the two valves are combined in one now, you can't get them separately and the check valve is important. All parts are available. If you want all this in more detail, email me at the address below and I will send it...John (UK)
