TO 30 starter

To30 - to start it you put gear shift in 1:00 position. Nothing? Battery is ok. positive ground. I suspect a bad starter switch,but not sure where it is? in the trans, how to test? I tried jumping the starter also with not even a spark? Going to put a new ground cable on the battery first and then maybe pull starter off. Any other ideas?

I'm not familiar with a fergy 30.. but

IF battery is good.. AND you got no spark jumping power to battery.. then you either have a starter grounding problem.. or a battery grounding problem.. or an 'open' in the starter.

The starter switches sometimes get arced up and have a poor contact. However they may also have some wear on them so that they do not actuate. Assuming that your 6V battery is fully charged and your starter is working, it could be the switch. To verify, see using a volt meter on the starter side of the switch and a a good ground, see if you have battery voltage when the transmission lever is moved to the "S" position. Then move the lead that was on the starter lug to the battery side of the the switch and verify that you have battery voltage there. If you have it on the battery side of the switch but not on the starter side when the lever is in the "S" position, the switch is either bad or needs adjusting. Measure the voltage similarly at the starter lug to check the starter cable for continuty. I fytou don't have battery voltage on the bateery sisde of the switch then it's either the battery connection or the cable that's has a problem. If you have battery voltage to the starter with the lever in the "S" position then the starter is bad or it's grounded poorly. I, however, have never had a poor ground situation on my TO-30. Check the grounding cable on the dash and make sure it's not corroded or rusty.

There are four nuts on the switch housing that hold the switch and the studs that holds the switch on are in a slotted plate. Loosen those nuts and try to slide the switch rearward and see if that helps.

You might have to try moving it to other positions but when I had this problem, rearward workd for me.

the key switch is ok. Where is the starter switch housing? right side some place? I have to replace the groung battery cable because its very rusty and old. grounding could be the problem but, I suspect more. Tractor is at other farm so I will have to go work on it later. Thanks for the help.

The starter switch is located in the top of the bell housing underneath the battery IF you have the OEM starter system. Some of these were converted to solenoids by shade tree mechanics so then if that's what you have, you need to check out that circuit.

The starter switch is accessed from the backside of the dash. I can't remember if it's 2 or 4 bolts, then just pull it out from the backside of the dash. Then you can test it, clean it or replace it.
