Hood morning, i ordered a governor for my TO 30 and it can
with a shim. When i took the old governor off it did not have
one. I also noticed the back plate of the governor was not
wearing even just on the outer edges. Do i need to put this
shim on ?

Yes. The Z-129 engine uses the shim behind the governor ball assembly. The Z-134 engine uses the same governor, but does not require the shim.

Pay close attention to the torque figure on the big nut. Overtorque and break the camshaft.

The way I understand it, if the face of the cam gear is solid, machined flat, then it does not need the shim.

If it is cast with a recess, then it needs the shim.

Bottom line, when the nut is tightened, everything must seat flat against the gear or the shim, not distort the cage.
