To late for winter wheat??

Steve in Mo

I am in center east Missouri the weather has been warmer than average so far this season. Is it to late to put in some winter wheat for cover and next years green ferterlizer?

I would have to say yes it is to late. It might make it up and winter kill and it still would not have a good root system. Some old timers said that they have planted wheat in frozen ground and it came up the next spring. Seed and fuel are so high I would say it would be risky. Good luck if you try it though. I'm in NE MO by the way.

I'm going to take the opposite side and say plant it.....it should be fine. As long as it germinates it will make it. I'm west of you a bit so probably have about the same weather and soil conditions. If the ground is working ok, then plant it. Wheat has nine lives....you can't hardly kill it after it comes up. Just up your seeding rate some.

Be sure and plant it a little deeper, I would recommend 2-3 inches. I've seen Dad plant wheat during Thanksgiving when the snow was flying. Always resulted in a decent stand but yields were significantly below average.

Steve, I and everyone else in the southern KC area are just now seeing our wheat emerge. I have had it in since Halloween day and some of it three weeks before then. We just did not have the moisture to bring it. I would say if you have the moisture and ground temp go for it.

About 7-8 years ago, we had a really wet fall. I planted wheat the Tues. and Wed. before thanksgiving in wetter than desirable conditions. The clay was somewhat frozen when I started working ground that Monday morning. We bumped the planting rate up about 10%. It turned out to be some of the best yielding wheat we ever had, near 95 bu./ac.. We didn't even bother to put any fertilizer on until spring because we didn't have the time, and didn't have much faith in it making a crop.

Was it dumb luck? Perfect timing? Winter and Spring conditions were great? I don't know. I know it worked, and wouldn't be afraid to try it again in similar conditions.

I'm in North Central Indiana.
