I have a ferguson 30 and it never smoked and now after an oil change it is smoking. It is blue smoke. It starts right up and runs strong but its pouring smoke. Any suggestions. My oil pressure is running 40.

1. have you owned the tractor for a while and have changed oil in it before?

2. if you just bought the tractor is this the first oil change for you? If so, you could have installed a different oil than was previously used in the tractor. Could be a probbem with the oil filter.

Did you use some type cleaner in the crankcase before you changed oil?

If you used the same oil that you have used before, check the oil containers, if you still have them. Manufactrue could have put auto transmission fluid in oil containers, anything could have happen.

Have heard of this: 3 of 5 qts of newly purchased motor oil had auto transmission fluid
in the containers.

If none of the above, then change the oil again, new oil, new filter, might add 1 qt of lucas oil stablizer,

Otherwise you may be looking at more serious motor work.

Good luck and let us know what you find.

How long have you allowed the engine to run since you changed the oil, it could be that the seals on the valves are leaking and oil has gone through them with the increase in oil pressure that there would be when you changed the oil. This would allow more oil up to the valve gear. If this is the case it should clear up when it gets hot and does some work, it will just burn any excess, if it continues smoking you may have to consider fitting new oil seals, this can be done without removing the Head if you are careful...John

Does it smoke at all powers or does it smoke most at idle or smoke most at high powers?

Your relief valve must be stuck closed to get 40 psi.The normal oil pressure is 25-30 psi.

Make sure that the breather tube is not clogged becauses that can happen and the crankcase pressures can rise and actually force oil into the distributor and out the seals.

Jerry, have just recently completely rebuilt the Z 129 engine. new sleeves, pistons, valves, rebuilt the pump. When I started it up it turned over maybe two revolutions and it was running, at first it was carrying 35 PSI then it went to 40 PSI and that is where it is running now, at idle maybe down to 35. Are you saying there maybe something wrong with it? Richard

Richard,

If you have a Z129, the factory specs call for a normal oil pressure of 25-30 psi.

The pressure relief valve should regulate the pressure to those levels until enough wear sets into the major bearings to cause the the relief valve to be full closed. Then you start to see deterioration in the oil pressure as wear increases and the oil pressure will continue to drop til you fix the cause or damage in the engin. On my TO-30, hot or cold, idle or max rpm, the oil pressure stays at 26-27 psi.

I don't know whether yours or this poster's oil pressure is excessive but it's not normal and in my opinion, indicates a problem. Your getting 35-45 psi when ou should be getting 25-30 psi. Is it a serious problem? Dunno. Excessve pressures can cause seal leakage.

The relief valve can be adjusted to increase the spring tension by shimming and thus hold higher oil pressures. You can reduce the relief pressure by removing shims(I believe they're just 1/4" washers). It could also have the wrong spring. It could also be stuck and not relieving properly. When you rebuilt the pump did you check the relief valve? I believe the manual specifies a spring length but don't hold me to it.

Old tractor . Probably hard old valve seals . Slim chance that the return holes in the head are plugged and to much oil is staying in the valve cover area . Just a thought .

I have a 1952 TO30,, runs good but smokes BAD on start up? I don't understand what good the oil seal under the cup and keeper on intake only does much to keep oil from getting sucked into engine? Umbrella seals right at the bottom of valve stem like all old school engines makes more sense? Can anybody shed some light on this?
