TO35- 6v regulator

I've got a 1955 TO-35. When I bought it this summer it looks like someone replaced the voltage regulator. It was not charging when I bought it. I took apart the regulator and "cleaned" the contacts--and it worked fine for a while. Now it normally is discharging, unless I tap on the regulator cover, and then for a while it will charge, then alternate charging and then finally go back to discharging. I wondered about putting a capacitor between the generator and "L" lead on the regulator.

Does anyone have any ideas what is going on?

Thanks!

Richard:
I did polarize it, but even before that if you take off the field wire and ground it the generator puts out fine. It seems the voltage regualtor makes and breaks the one relay, and then it "sticks" (I guess open). I replaced the wiring from the generator to the regulator.
That's why I wondered about using a capacitor like on the ignition points.
Thanks!

The regulator is supplying a switched Ground to the generator field and the regulator obtains that ground by the fact that it's case is well grounded to the tractor structure and the generator is likewise grounded to structure. Be sure both are well grounded.

I will not get into telling others very much about the electrical system as I am not versed in it much at all. I only asked about polarizing it just as a hunch. Richard

If you have had the Regulator apart, have you reset the clearances on the points gaps, if they are not correct it will either not charge or overcharge. If they are correct then you may have to change it, they are available from this site, look under parts...John

Do you happen to have these numbers? I'm having the same type of issue, except mine work until I shut the tractor off.

Have you checked the output voltage? You will need an analog meter because the ignition system creates enough EMI to disable a digital meter.

I was having the same problem that you described until I checked the output voltage and found it was set incorrectly. Once I got the cut-in voltage set correctly the charging system worked properly.

Hey DCA:
I found out the trick w/an analog meter versus the digital the first time I tried to check the voltage with my cheapie digital. Then I got out the analog. With the field grounded I'm getting over 7 volts.
Any suggestions how to properly set the cut-in voltage?
Thanks!
