I have a brother in law that always makes a big deal about going to the farmer's market. We just go out to the garden.

My older sister (now 80+) laughs about us complaining that we couldn't go to town and have a hamburger. We had to eat those darn home grown steaks.

3X!!! Part of the problem was our mom was not a great cook, every piece of meat was at least well done: steaks, hamburgers; chops; all fried the same way. We never knew what medium rare meat tasted like until dad bought a gas grill and started grilling steaks to his liking. Steaks tasted a lot better after that.

I was 30 years old before I knew you could have steak all in one piece . If you cook em like my mother does a McDonalds dollar cheeseburger beats it all to heck

We ate cull dairy cows when I was a kid. Had to cook steaks to within an inch of their life to get them out of the shoe leather category. And it was ingrained in us that we just didn't eat anything other than well done, as any sign of red meant certain death.

Fast forward to college- Date and I went to a nice restaurant before the annual Pink Rose Formal. I ordered my steak well done, as usual. Dinners came, I took a bite of my steak and it was the best flavor I had ever experienced. Down the table, the dentist's sophisticated kid from the Big City said to the waiter Well Done? I've never ordered Well Done in my life! I ordered Medium Rare! I looked at the little stick that came stuck into my steak, and it read Medium Rare. I quietly slipped it into my pocket, and continued to enjoy my steak. Good result all around- Jim got a new steak properly cooked, I finished my delicious dinner, and I never ordered Well Done again. That was 55 years ago.

My mom baked all our bread. I thought we were poor when I saw the other kids at school with their wonder bread sandwiches. One kid even had the crusts trimmed off.

my mom would cook everything to a nice real DARK brown. one day I asked her if we becoming jews she said why I said well it looks like we are having burnt offerings. Not a good thing to do. My youngest sister went a friends house for supper she said afterwards I didn't know food could taste good.
