Toting gun on tractor

How are y'all securing you gun on you "N" tractor. I'd like to tote my 22 rifle for snakes and such. Any ideas?

Jay

Snakes? They won't bite your tractor. Hey I have never carried a gun on a tractor. I have a friend tht used to carry a shotgun. Not sure how it happened but he blew three fingers off. As far as snakes, they aren't harming anyone, I hunt snakes as a sport and I don't kill what I catch. Which has included Rattlesnakes, Cottonmouths and Copperheads.

alot of people around here used to carry one, they just wired an old rifle scabbard to the fender, like a saddle scabbard. Most of those old timers used them to shoot pheasants and the occasional deer, though. Grin

If I carry on the tractor, it will be a .357 black hawk, 6 shot revolver, in a belt holster, less likely a quick draw shoulder holster.

Many ways to do that. Lay a hard case type holder made for a 4 wheeler on the hood and strap it down. A saddle type on the hood or fender also works well. Back before the cop stole my 22 pistol I would carry in on my tractor. And yes I said stole and yep I broke no laws and was not charged for any crime but still did not get my gun back

My thoughts exactly. I was over at my FIL's storage lot last weekedn and found a huge Texas Rat snake. My FIL said it was a copper head and was going to kill it. I told him it was NOT a copperhead, wasn't poisonous, and was VERY beneficial keeping the rat population down on his lot.

I once knew a man who always carried a 32 snub nose in his bib pocket when in the field. His son found him dead of a gun shot to the chest and a note writen in blood on the hood of his 8N. "accident"

I was mowing a field in East Texas around 1984 on a 40 hp Long tractor and ran over a big black snake. It must have stuck to the front tire, because when I first noticed it was when the head of the snake hit me on the left knee.

The pieces I could find made up about 6 feet, as wide as the mower that chopped it up.

I wouldn't have shot it, given the chance, but it's not 100% safe to be up in the tractor seat!
My 8N

Actually, I just park on them, and then find something to mess up their head with.

I carry a .38 special +P revolver. First two rounds are "rat shot" for horizontal snakes. Rest of the cylinders are loaded with hollowpoints for the upright snakes. Neighbors on either side of me have been in and out of jail for burglary and such. I've hired some of them to do odd jobs for me: Cleaning and trimming fence lines, trimming around the pond, etc. To them, I'm "the dude in the brick house." The folks up and down the road have never seen me without a sidearm, although, when I go into town, it's always concealed. That's the only reason I carry a gun on the tractor.

Snakes;

If I see one, it's time on earth is limited. I know some are beneficial to the land. But I figure for every one I see there are likely 20 or more that I don't. The ones that stay out of my sight are the smart snakes, and thus deserve to live. The ones that allow me to see them are stupid snakes, and thus are culled from the gene pool. Just doing my part for natural selection.

Rattle Snakes, Copperheads, and Cotton Mouths all get terminated with extreme prejudice. Both at my house and at the farm. If I, or anyone/thing I know ever gets bitten by a snake, it certainly won't be from a snake I've seen before.

I was thinking abut a rifle scabbard. I guess I'll go that route. I do carry a pistol in an ammo can I have mounted on one of the fenders. But I ain't worth a flip with a pistol at anything other than point blank range.

Yep and the cops that are closer to being crooks then law enforcement or some times it seems that way. I always loved the reason the P.A. gave for not giving it back. He said I might shot some one. I told him if I was going to shoot some one I sure would not use a 22 pistol but I would use a shot gun or a long range rifle all of which I own

That"s my deal. Lots of snakes in east TN, most are good ones to have around. When I spot one, I check out the head. If it"s round like a salamander it"s a good one. If it"s flat with pits behind the nose, it"s dead as soon as I can make it so.

I carry a pistol most of the time (CZ-52) when I"m oustside. A small of the back holster is easy to conceal under a t-shirt. Got some of the same neighbors mentioned earlier that have a taste for nose candy, so that"s why my family is armed. It sure has never occurred to me to hire any of them yahoos for anything on my property, just give them bad ideas.

Roane County deputies try hard, but it"s a big area and there are only 2 or 3 on patrol any given time. Like they say, "When seconds count, the police are only minutes away".

I took some not so old, but too small now! lined pair of blue jeans, and cut one leg off and sewed the bottom shut. And Tied a piece of rope in the belt loops and the other at the sewed bottom. It hangs off the side of the hood. .22 fits nice and is protected and tractor paint as well, very little if any cost.

22 shot shells (#12) in a pistol with 6" barrel is good for at least 10+ feet. One shot is usually all it takes. Shot shells not birdshot.

Dunk once you have one pinned like that all you need to do is turn the wheel back and forth 10 times or so and that does them in. I know no power steering make it hard to do. You can also lock up the rear tire using the brakes on one and that does the job. I killed a 2 foot copper head this morning with the front tire of my Honda 360 by locking up the front tire at about 10MPH but doing it that way you have to be very careful since it is easy to dump the bike locking up the front tire. Oh and that was on my gravel driveway

LOL!!!

You had better be really carefull doing things like that on a bike.

Yep, you can kill em like that, but then you can't have the fun of skinning them.

I've got a black snake living in my shed this summer keeping an eye on things and watching over the N. I hate snakes but since he's moved in the mice are gone, which is great because the tractor had become their favorite nesting place. Wish he would stay through he winter too!

That certainly is true.
In AL if you have a concealed weapon on your person and you didn't pay the sherrif for a permit you are commiting a crime.
Sometimes though it's better to be caught without a permit than to be caught with a weapon on your person!
I don't carry one because I'm afraid I might use it.

I have an ammo can mounted on the rt. fender of my 2N for a toolbox. It makes a good place for me to carry my .45 auto. BTW, I wouldn"t carry the .45 if I wasn"t a good shot with it.

Mr. Bob

The atv mount someone talked about sounds like a good idea. Just be sure to leave the chamber empty while riding around...things just seem to happen with one in the chamber.

Snakes! You carry guns for snakes! Look at what lives in my neighborhood. This puddy tat has eight legs and two tails, if you look close enough.

I carry a .45 ACP or a .44 Magnum revolver. The .45 is a little less in the way with a belt holster and weighs a lot less than the Ruger Super Redhawk. The .45 is one of those Springfield Armory XM models, which has two safeties - one on the trigger and the other at the back of the grip. I'd never say foolproof, but real tough to set off accidentally.

BTW, I've seen or gotten photo's of cougars, bobcats, coyotes, mule deer, badgers, and other assorted critters, but haven't seen a snake yet. I do keep an eye out for them, though.

My nephew recently needed to replace his pistol kicense in NY (long Island) because it got torn. As he got his replaced license the officer asked him what he uses the pistol for. He told him that his uncle has land in upstate NY and that we shoot targets and skeet. The officer told him that this activity is not legal. He was told that target shooting may only be practice in a 'properly licensed place' such as shooting ranges. That the only time we are allowed to carry and discharge weapons on my property is during hunting season and a valid hunting license. We have not as yet checked with any other(in NYS state) authority to verify if this is true or not. Anyone in NY state hear anything about this?

Perfect snake gun is a Taurus Judge, shoots .410 shotgun shells and 45 Long pistol loads. 5 shot revolver and easy to carry on your hip, or use a couple of tie-wraps and attach a nylon holster in a convenient location.
