Tractor battery best brands

Needing to buy some batteries for a couple tractors. Any suggestions on what to buy or not buy. Things ain't cheap and they don't seem to make em like the use to.

This field was recently plowed over on the John Deere section. No one was a big fan of NAPA brand. Exide and Interstate seemed to be good. Just as important as good batteries are good cables.

I use Walmart's best batteries in everything. They have a 3 year free replacement. Some have lasted over 12 years. Hal

I have had good luck with Duralast gold top batteries from auto zone.
they are made in the US by Johnson Controls

have a good Warranty and are always open if you need service.

so far so good for me, I have them in my dodge diesel truck and Ferguson tractor and old jeep.

I use carquest batteries. Never had one yet That did't last at least 7 years.

I just removed the battery from my wd45. it was 14 years old!

You need one of theose little chargers. Some stores call them a battery butler. They are 1amp and turn themselves off when the battery reaches 13.6 volts. The one I have will work on both 6 and 12 volts. Keeping your battery fully charged will help a lot.

I'll never use a Wal mart battery. My brother bought an Oldsmoble that had a new Walmart battery. Every six months you had to return the battery to Wal mart for a replacement.
I could mark the calendar when I replaced his battery. Within a week of the battery being six month old. I would get a call, " My battery is dead I'm at..."

I bought him a Carquest battery and never had to get up at 1 am again to change his battery.

I agree on the NAPA being the worst. Couldn't get more than about 1 year out of them, and NAPA wouldn't honor the warranty. Out of frustration I went to O'Reilly's. That 6 volt battery has been in the same 1950 H for probably 5 years now and still going strong.

Oreilly's batteries are made by East Penn. Same company that makes Deka.

I have 3 or 4 China Mart batteries out in my shop all 3 year warranty and all are DEAD. Took one back and 3 years it if no pro rate no nothing

Pretty much now days if you buy a battery at NAPA or O'Reilly's Or China Mart you stand a good chance they where made in one of 3 or 4 companies that make them so pretty much buy it where ever and good chance it will be the same as to place down the street. I too need a couple and I plan on trying a place in town that sells blems for around $45 each

I seldom recommend anything from Mother Deere anymore,but it's hard to beat their Strong Box batteries. Somebody said the other day they're made by Exide.

They must be made to Deere's specs as I find Exide batteries to be pretty ordinary normally. I've bought the last few batteries from CaseIH as the price was substantially better than Deere's. We shall see as to how long they last. The Strong Box batteries I have used were excellent and the 4010 is going to need batteries for spring.

Regarding best brands for batteries there are several good
ones around probably lots that we never see here in the UK.
I have found over the years that the replacement battery
needs to be at least equal to or better than the spec of the
original battery regarding the data on the rating plate of the
original when it comes to it's Amp Hr rating and cold cranking
amps capacity.
If the new battery has the correct capacity it should work ok
especially in cold weather, I have seen many so called
economy batteries some that don"t even carry a makers name
that barely make it to the end of their warranty period.

For maybe what it is worth(maybe nothing),Exide had a display at a FNH open house and while talking to the rep.His quote was he would like you to buy from this dealer,HOWEVER for tractor-combine batterys ,buy from JD-CIH-FNH or Agco branded batterys.Not Exide auto parts store batterys.Plates-molding are different.This was on Group 31s.True or not we will never know.

The last one I bought was an Exide (625 CCA)that I got at TSC. I'm still using it, but it is 2 years old and has started getting weaker. I need to buy a 6 volt battery for another tractor. I may go with the O,Reilly battery this time around. They have a 640 CCA and a 675 CCA 6 volt battery.

I have had good luck with interstate. I'm sure there are some other brands just as good. I have read some other posts down below that claim they have had good luck with the El-cheapo's. I have not. I think some companies use the warrenty thing as a sales promotion. There battery's doen't quit live as long as the warrenty. You take the bad battery back to make good on the warrenty and as a sales pitch, they take that amount off of the price of another new one and start all over again. Its a sales promotion. Helps them get return customers and sell more battery's. Don't buy anymore battery's of a brand that you have found to repeatedly not outlive the warrenty.

Don't buy more CCA's than you need. adding more plates to a battery of the same dimensions, makes it more prone to vibration damage. I buy the closest battery to the tractor, geographically, with one exception. When I go to walmart, I take my battery tester with me, cause I have gotten so many duds there (batteries that are bad, sitting on the shelf, either bad from the factory, or from the simployees dropping them!)

I"ve always used interstate and had good luck. They are a little more expensive but I need my tractors and grain truck to start when I need them. Napa is by far the worst batt you can purchase and has no warrenty after the first year. The walmart batt"s are ok but don"t hold up to the cold here in North Dakota. they seem to have too much power drain when the temps get low.

There may be some truth to that. I do know that when I worked for Advance Auto Parts if the customer told you they were putting a car or truck battery on a tractor then they had no warranty. I had some customers tell me they were putting them on tractors or skid steers and I would tell them I did NOT hear that...lol. I would then tell them why and I would put it in the computer as an Chevy truck or something and I would tell them if it went bad and they brought it back in to say it was on their old truck. Growing up on a farm I would always try to help the farmers out when they came in there.
