Tractor Identification MF 2200?

I need your expertise in the identification/confirmation of my older Massey Ferguson Tractor. This is my first large tractor and I know very little about it which brings me to a dilemma because the dealer I called informed me that sometimes parts are interchanged and the engine cover/hood may not be the original hood/cover. I need to order a service/parts manual because my steering is no longer working and I cannot steer it at all. I am trying to also identify what my steering problem is. I see the faded model number on the engine hood and it indicates 2200 and the loader model number is listed as a 200. The serial number on the id plate mounted on the dash area indicates it’s a 9A 46520. I have also attached some photos of the tractor in a hope that it will help you. Up until now this tractor has been a real work horse and it needs to be refurbished with some tlc. Any help with identification and steering diagnosis will be truly appreciated.

It certainly looks like a 2200 according to a book I have with a picture. The engine should be a 3 cylinder diesel or a 4 cylinder gas. It is supposed to have hydrostatic steering, which is the best. I'm not sure where to begin to fix it, pump probably? Not sure about the serial number. Would guess around 1968. If it has the 3 Cylinder Diesel, look on the bottom of the oil pan near the front of the tractor. It will have the casting date on it. I think the 2200 turned into the MF 40. There is also a 2200 forklift. The dealer here has one but it has a 3 cyl gas engine unlike the 4 cylinder Continental listed in the loader tractor. They said the forklift just keeps running and running. I think the forklifts were still made after the tractors were stopped. That could explain the different gas engines as the MF 40 tractor also used the 3 cyl Perkins gas engine. MF's are good loader tractors. Hopefully it won't cost too much to fix your steering. It is worth fixing though. Hope this helps. Dave

Thank you Dave for the information I really appreciate it. Just for your information the engine is a 3 cyl. diesel. I am going to check the oil pan as you recommended. Do you know what year the model 2200 changed over to an MF 40 and are the parts interchangeable between the 2200 and the MF 40? Yes, I do plan on refurbishing this tractor that is why I need to find out which model # it is so I can order all of the reapair/parts/owners manuals for it.

I don't know for sure that it became the MF 40 but they are both similar in size, use the same diesel engine and have the hard nose front end. The 3 cylinder Perkins diesel is the finest engine ever made. I don't know about parts interchangability but would guess there would be some. The engine for sure and probably the drive train. Big Deans site shows the 2200 made from 1965-1970 and the MF40 made from 1969-1975. I would say it is a 2200. The dealer telling you hoods get changed sounds rediculous to me. Is there a used hood wrecker that just happens to have a bunch of old hoods lying around? I think not. Chuck B. may have some additional info that could help you. Dave
