tractor judge

I"m looking for someone to judge restored tractors at our local fair. I know people don't like to judge someone elses work but this is something we do to get tractors on display at our fair. We are in Armada Mi there are a few perks involved if interested email me. Thanks Jim

when u find someone ask them one question, do u have a favorite ? IH jD AC ect. if its a IH freak like me it wouldnt be fair to the other tractor brands same if it was a JD freak..ect find a nutral person thats more into cars not tractors or a farmer that dont care what he uses... just a idea for ya & a thought

a real judge will be hard to find because a real judge dont play favorite, you will have to pick a judge, man or woman, that still knows what restoring is all about :~)

set up a points system and take off points for problems you find with the tractors. the one with the most points left is the winner. you have to judge them all the same. get 3 people that are not all partial to one brand. have them agree on where to deduct points. as an example i deduct points for over spray, dents that should have been removed, spark plug wires that are painted, for tires as long as they are good tires i am not hard on them.

Wow, Jim that's quite a task. What do you judge on, faithfullness to factory, best paint jobs? Sounds like you would need a judge for each brand to know what is original.

DON'T JUDGE THE TRACTORS. Judge the owner. What did he start with, what kind of records did he keep, how much outside help did he (I should have been saying he or she) get, was he creative. You get the idea. Been doing that at our local fair.

Once you get into that there can be alot of misery.The judging must be very consistent and abide by a set of rules.In the AMCA everyone that gets some points deducted on their antique bike feels slighted.Its almost better to just give everyone some kind of trophy for just showing up.When you think about it its not so enjoyable to be locked in to staying the entire day in the sun with not being able to leave early.The responsibility and liability of watching you tractor or when some idiot steals your caps or something.Keep it as freindly as possible, consistent and fair.One guy gets five points deducted for something not original another gets ten points deducted for same thing and everybodys mad at the judges and the organization.How to you handle overrestored with all modern urethane and high gloss.Better to have trophies like best paint, furthest distance entry,most original, etc.Of course a guy with a nice original tractor would disagree.

Don't judge 'em at all. Just causes hard feelings. And are you going to give the most points to the authentically restored ones, and knock off points for "over restored"? That'll sure be a hit with the guys who spent big $$ for the Imron paint jobs. I'm a member of the Hudson club (HET- for Hudson, Essex Terraplane), and one of the hallmarks of the club is that there is never any judging of any kind at our meets. Many who are or have been in other clubs say the "no judging" rule has probably been the biggest single factor in our club's popularity (and internal harmony).

Forget about judjing! Anybody that I know will not go to any show where there is judjing.

Try something different for trophies. Some of the shows I go to have oldest tractor, furthest distance, and crowd favorite. I won ugliest once, but not sure if it was for the tractor or for me. :lol:

we used to have judging for tractors in our lions club parade.
it got to be a big headache. it made for bad feeling on part of those showing tractors and for the guy doing the judging. one guy got chewed out because he picked the "wrong" guy as best. the man judge picked had 8 or more tractors and every one is in great condition.
if you want to create a problem this is a good way to start.

All very good advise. Also stay away from "peoples choice" or spectator voting. The guy who has the most "freinds" at the event WILL win ! If not he will buy MORE beer the next year and THEN he will win! A FAR better idea is to take the trophy and expence money and pay the local newspaper or other publication to do color coverage of participants tractors and owners standing by them .

I live in the area close to Armada and i go to the fair every year with my tractors and enter them in the judging. correct me if im wrong Jim, but im under the impression that the fair HAS to have tractors judged in order to get state funding for the fair? in other words the state forces the fair to do the judging, right? i would imagine that the state has rules that has to be followed for the judging. ever since ive gotten into collecting antique tractors, ive always brought at least one to the armada fair to be judged. i never have any hard feelings about winning or losing, and i don"t think anyone else there does either. i don"t know of anyone that would probably know enough to judge, but i will ask around for you. I know there is a lot of people that have replied for your posting, but i think that they kinda jumped the gun about it before asking any questions. by the way i heard that Mr. Crews passed away last night, wasn"t he one of the people that used to run the antique tractor judging a few years back?
