tractor miles per gallon?????

Next weekend I want to take my model A out for a nice long ride but I have no clue how far I can go on a half tank of fuel. Any of you guys that do tractor rides ever figure out a ball park estimation of how far a model A can go on a gallon of gasoline?

It's like an old Math question,, gallons per hour/
miles per hour.. a styled A will do 10-12 MPH,, and
they will put a lot of fuel away, but I'm not sure
what they would burn just going down the road with
out towing anything..maybe 4-5 GPH ?? That may be
a bit high...My old 37 A had the Behlem Over/drive,
it would do about 22MPH,,but a medium hill gave it
a work out...

An A can use around 1 1/2 gallons per hour when
making half power. If you're cruising down a flat
road - I doubt it takes more then 1/2 power to do
what you want to do unless you're pulling a very
heavy trailer behind you.

Yes JD your probably close on that,, I just keep thinking about how fast a tank of fuel goes away while plowing...they always seemed very thirsty...

I put 1 gallon in my G and went to the end of my
driveway pulling an R diesel to bleed filters Less
than a quarter mile and I run out of gas half way
back.

Well, I can't speak for an A, but back in the day I drove our tractors between to farms about 20 miles apart. To the best of my memory here is about how much each used (road gear full throttle whole trip on flat ground essentially)

4620 D about 6.5 gallons
4230 D about 5 gallons
4020 D about 5 gallons
2010 G about 4? Only did the 2010 once and it took an hour and half vs 60 min for the 40 and 42 and 50 min for the 4620. So I averaged around 3.5 to 5 mpg on the road. Not very scientific but its a ballpark idea.

I am going to fill the tank but its not going to be a one way trip. I need to get an idea of how far I can go before I turn around and come home. :wink:

You should have an idea how long it will run on a
tank and just take an extra full Jerry can with you.
Most tractors will run well over 4 hours anyway.

I went on a local tractor ride once with my 50. Not sure of the
miles, but we started at 8am, stop for lunch and ended around
4 . Had no problem going all day on one tank of fuel. Most
tractors will go longer then one wants to sit on them. lol

I've taken my JD MT and IH Super C on all-day tractor rides. We usually ride 50 to 60 miles. I carry an extra 2-gallon can of gas and a couple of times I was glad to have it along. I think each holds around 10 gal. We usually run at about full throttle, about 10 or 11 mph. In fact in about an hour I'm off for a ride today. Taking the SC this time. It needs warmed up.

An 'A' will burn about 4 gallons an hour plowing and a little less than half that just driving around. With a 16 gallon tank you'll be sick of it before you run out of gas lol!

My 43 B got 7 mpg, I put a gallon in it to get it closer to the gas cans, forgot and went down the road, 7 miles later i called the wife asking her to come rescure me

I always go with a full tank on tractor cruises. But here is some thoughts on what you might need. Our tractor cruises have a 12 mph minimum speed and we put the slowest tractors up front. Depending on your "A" model it probably will be traveling at about that speed anyway. We usually go about 25 miles on our cruises so I'll use 24 miles for an easy figure to work with which means you will be actually be traveling at the warp speed of 12 mph for two hours and burn about 8 gallons of gasoline. However that figure is based on ideal conditions and tractor cruises are anything but that. You always have someone having minor issues that slow you down so there is idling time, accelerating time, terrain issues, carbs out of adjustment, fouling plugs, trash in old gas, etc. Most of my cruises have taken about 4 hours so I would not go with less than 15-16 gallons unless you want to be the "idiot" who ran out of gas, not my words but I've heard it bantered around on cruises. Don't waste a lot of brain power on figuring this out...fill it up and enjoy the scenery. JMHO

I have went on tractor rides for the last 6 years of 60+ miles with my JD-B and a Ford 8N. Both used about a gallon an hour.

Leave it to the missus to point out the easy answer to a stupid question. She suggested that I put four gallons in the tank to get me down the road, and then carry five gallons to get me back home.
