tractor tires?

My old IH needs rear tires (14-9 x 24) I"m still in shock after being told $455 per tire!! Anyone know a cheaper source than Firestone or Goodyear? The two tires are as much as the old lady is worth. Is there such a thing as recaps for tractors? or used tires. Can"t believe everyone pays that much. Hope someone has a better way than this!
Thanks

You could try BFG but I doubt that would be any different.... or another dealer. That does sound expensive for a 24" tire, but not exactly way out of line. I paid 515 I think for a pair of 12.4x24 BFG radials a couple years ago. Bias was a lot less at that time.
Other than that I'd expect that you'll be looking at a Chinese tire to get one that's any cheaper, and then you will have a CHEAP tire.
Personally I'd look around at another tire shop(s).

Put some new fronts on the Ford(7610 MFWD) in Sep 06 14.9-24 about $200 each for bias BFG. Put some new fronts on the CIH 595 (MFWD) last winter 12.4R24 closer to $300 each, BFG radials.

Hey Harry, I just checked Tucker Tire on Ebay or you, Buy it now price for a pair of 14.9 24' 8 ply ag tires $400. plus 125 shipping. Total price $525 to your door. I have bought tires from them in the past and have been pleased. Hope this helps Dave

Thanks for all the replies. I found a used one this am for $125 about 85% tread. It will do until I finish restoring the old gal. Then I'll get the new ones. Not sure it worth all the work it will take to get it back in a worthwhile condition. The previous owner was baling wire and welder mechanic, if you know what I mean. Have found things like lug nuts and tire rod ends welded. Go figure!!!

Your going to spend $125.00 now, and buy the new ones later too??? And this is saving money??

I guess using the $125.00 toward the "new set" would be wouldn't be a better deal....

Huh, I thought this was an adult forum? What kind of name is Huh? If you don’t know all the facts you shouldn’t put your foot in your big mouth! Not that it is any of your bee’s-wax, but with all I have going on, I may not get done before I croak or there may be more wrong, than I know of! In either case, I or my estate can more easily retrieve the $125 than the cost of a new one. Might even make a buck, since it is now mounted. Also now that it has been cleaned up and mounted, it’s a lot better than I first thought. I probably won’t need to replace it at all.

To the rest of you, thanks for all the inputs. I talked to Tucker Tire this pm and found there are several dealers near me. I’m getting two 8N tires from them, will save about $12 a tire over my Co-op. They had to order them, but I’m not in a hurry anyway.
Maybe I can return the favor by helping some of you with a little tip! If you are plagued by flats like we are here in south Texas and don’t want to pay the big bucks to have the poly-fill. Think about used airplane tires! I’m using both. My JD uses 10-16 on the front, to ploy fill would have been $275 per tire, plus cost of new tires. I got 28/32 ply tires for $100 each and they mounted them for free. I haven’t had a flat in 5 yrs. My Moline ‘BF’ has had the poly-fill for about 8 years, My 8N and hay hauler for about 3 years. I notice the rubber it starting to get soft on the ‘BF’, dealer tells me they have being trying to improve the fill, so that may not be a problem anymore?
The aero tires come in most sizes, to fit the front, and I wouldn’t want them on the rear anyway because of the tread. If anyone tries them, be sure to get them to mount them for you. Some local tire shops won’t or can’t do it, because of all the ply’s. These things are strong, I had a bad valve stem. I didn’t know the tire was flat until I used the loader. Another thing, a few tires have had tiny holes drilled near the core. (this has to do with the tire being legally called a salvaged tire, not all states require this, so ask about it) They will still work, but you will need a tube! I got mine in Houston, TX. But they are poping up all over. Hope this helps someone! Sure nice not worry about flats, thorns are a big problem here.
Thanks again!

Glad you're up and running fairly cheaply. I just wanted to chime in on the "cheap tires" thing. I got a set of used 14.9x28s that looked brand new out of some fellow's barn for a really good price. They were from Romania (Danubiana)and weather-checked something horrible on me and one side checked all the way through in about two years. Tread still looked good but I threw both tires out. I think I put Firestones on that one (either that or Goodyears) 6-8 years ago and they're still in great shape. Much better value for my dollar than those "deals" I got.

I bought a pair of Galaxy tires for my 50 from Miller tire (www.millertire.com). Had them for something like 4 years, always stored outside and they still look very good.

Can"t remember where they are made, somewhere in one of the old Soviet countries I think.

The Miller tire site has lots of good information and may be of interest to you even if you get your tires elsewhere.
