tractor vet

Hi Dan. Its john from canonsburg pa with the sick IH 364. I finally got some time to dig it back out of the shed. It still runs terrible. No power, lots of black smoke. I plan on checking the compression this weekend. I am at a loss for ideas. If the compression is good....no idea where to look next.

sounds like it is starving for air. pull intake hose off that is closest to motor, could be a muddoppers nest inside somewhere. i had on do that. good luck

Hi Mike. Its a lot deeper than that...lol. I have done and checked a lot of things. Look on YouTube for my video of the tractors. My name on there is jwmirz.

Sounds like its missing in the video, but could be deceiving. With the engine running crack the injectors to see if their is a pitch change. If on one cyl their is no change in sound u have a dead hole. If that's the case pull valve cover and inspect. Maybe a stuck valve, or a bent push rod. Or maybe one rocker arm backed off.

Check your intake valves. Sounds like one is not sealing properly. Might want to pull the head, part of the valve face may have cracked off allowing air to escape, causing the sound in the intake you are hearing along with the loss of power and smoking.

Hate to pull the head...but its looking like I need to do that. It does sound like its missing a bit. Each cylinder will drop rpm when a line is cracked.

John, I have been thinking about your problem and before you go and pull the head, remove the manifolds and check the gaskets. I remember a few years back I had a tractor that smoked a lot, had no power and ran hot when on the dyno. The muffler & manifold were glowing red, but still low on power. Long story, fast forward to the cause. It turned out to be an exhaust manifold gasket that was install wrong, restricting the exhaust flow. Cleaned up the manifold, installed new gaskets and problem solved. It looks like you have checked all the common things now it's time to go out on the limb and start looking at the strange. Keep us posted. charlieu
