i have a massey furguson tractor it has 2 speeds on the pto i con not get low to work high speed works well any ideas thank you

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and ASSUME you realize ONE speed is the standard 540 rpm pto, and the other is "ground speed" pto that only moves when the tractor is rolling, and turns at a speed relative to ground speed (as the name would indicate)

Without knowing the model I'd have to go with MFpoor. Unless you have a newer model i.e. after 1985ish, I do not know of two powered PTO settings.

From 1958 on they had Engine powered that turnned at 540rpm at ~ 2000 engine rpm. And they had what was called ground speed PTO the turned powered by the rear wheel. 1 RPM for ever 22.5" of ground travel (based on standard tires). And yes the PTO would run in reverse if you backed up.

So set it in that "Low" position and see if it turns as you drive the tractor.

Hi Jeff, I wish mine did turn 540 at 2000 RPM. The Super 90 I have and the 35 I had both have STD. PTO speed at just under 1600 engine RPM. The tractor would be much more useful if it ran at the proper engine speed for the std. PTO. I have never got a good answer as to why the boys at MF thought that would be cool. Any ideas????

If you're referring to the "ground speed" pto position, the pto shaft will then turn only when the tractor is moving and at a speed proportionate to the speed of the tractor.

The fact that the engines ran at only at about 1600 rpm to attain 540 rpm pto speed was actually a selling point of the tractors. My father was a Massey dealer and would stress this point. This resulted in longer engine life and less fuel usage which makes sense as you think about it. The tractor pto horsepower was rated at this slower engine speed. I suppose if you are used to other makes you would feel that the engine needs to run at full throttle to get maximum use. Not true with Masseys.
