trailer axle weight

I just bought a used trailer, 18 x 7 flatbed tandem axle. The guy said that they are 6000 lb axles, but I don"t know how to verify that, the labels on the axles are too worn to read. The wheels are 16 inch and 6 lug. The trailer is otherwise very heavily built and has electric brakes.

With 16" wheels and 6 lugs they sound like 6000 lb. axles. 7000 lb. are almost the same but have 8 lugs. Dave

6K axles... the six lug set-up is the key... 7K axles have eight lugs... lighter axles have four or five lugs. ...D

My trailer tag says the axles are 3500#, and they have six bolt hubs. I've been told that the rims are off a Chevy.

trailer tag or axle tag??? my guess is that either the axles have been changed, or the hubs have been changed. I have a rig with 3500# axles on it & they have a beefy set of 5 lug hubs. ...D

Wouldn't the diameter and/or width of the bearings and/or shaft size have more to do with the axle capacity than the number of lug studs? It only stands to reason that an eight lug hub is not going to be manufactured with for use with small bearings, but you can buy hubs with just about any lug combination you want from places like Northern Tool.

I didn't see any tags on the axles when I had it upside down for re-wiring. The trailer tag says 2 at 3500.
