Trailer brakes

We bought a car hauler last fall, it is a homemade job from a local stock car racer who moved up I guess. It was built quite awhile ago and pulls very nice no swaying or any thing like that. The problem is someone cut the wires to the electric brakes, so it has none. I have not torn into this yet because I know almost nothing about them. Where can I find info about how they work and what are good sources of parts for them? Thanks alot Mike

Do you know that any trailer over 2500 lbs in the state of Ohio is required to have brakes . If you get stoped for a light out they will check you . I live in WV just across river fram Ohio, Have a brother-n-law that lives just across river . And I have been stopped several times while hauling farm eqpt back and forth to his farm . They always check to make sure I have eqpt tied down and if I have Brakes . & that all Lights work .

Another point should be mentioned, that is that anything over 10K GVW/GCW should have a DOT number if you cross any state lines. I don't like this , but have to live with it.

Are these brakes the magnetic type? If so they are simple to repair.you must have a brake controller costs about 55$ at Wal mart, also can get one at must austo parts places or any trailer place.. The wiring will have to thru the truck cab to the controller and then to the brake switch on brake pedal and then to rear of truck where with a 7 pole plug kit(30$) connects to the brakes, and lites. Took me about a days work and I am old and slow. Henry
