Trailer for tractor

Option 1: 1996 - 16ft Tandem axle, 7,000 lbs trailer listed in an auction next Sat. What is it worth?
Option 2: Neighbor has a heavy duty construction type, beavertail trailer frame in his scrap pile. Would it be worth dragging it someone and have them put axles under it? He bought it at a state surplus auction and used the axles for a saw mill. I think the state hauled a JD 450d dozer on it.

If the trailer has 2 3500lb. axles it will carry about 1000 to 1500lbs. less than that because of the weight of the trailer. Is it a drop deck and if so how wide between the wheel wells? How wide is the tractor? If you're carrying a small tractor the big trailer might be overkill. Dave

Option 1 is not nearly heavy enough for a Farmall 400, and option 2 could quite easily end up costing you more than the price of a brand new trailer. Do some homework, check the prices of new trailers from several different dealers. You might be pleasantly surprised. For what it's worth, your pick-up truck is barely adequate.

That heavy half would struggle with that 400 because the tail would always be waggin' the dog. Especially if you were using a short bumper pull car-type trailer.

Might be okay if you were just yanking it around from field to field, but out on the public roads, I'd be a wee bit concerned.

I have a 7000 lb 16' utility trailer that I purchased About 4 years ago to hual my 1715 NH 27 HP 4WD tractor that weights about 3000 lbs with tires loaded and with a 5' Kingkutter rotary mower. was one of the best purchases I ever made Paid $1135 for it new with 4 wheel brakes, 5' ramps & ramp racks. Since then I have added Hyd winch powerd by a 5 HP honda engine, Spair tire rack with tire, and loading jacks on back. Trailer is used all the time fot something haulling in broken down eqpt, Hay, Lumber & trees to mill. Don't know how I got along with out it .

You've got your outfit set up just about perfect, I'd say.

SDE is talking about a little bigger tractor, however. Just think it is too big for a trailer like that.

I don't do a heck of a lot of towing tho. :>(

Agree with Rusty, that tractor is about 6000lbs bare bones, any weight in the tires would add more weight. A 7000 lb trailer is close to 1500lbs, so you are overloaded before you start. A 1/2 pickup is also barely rated to tow 7000lbs though some people do it. A heavier trailer would be in order and check your tow rating of your PU. Good Luck, be carefull. Towing wrong can be a disaster waiting to happen.

I didn't realize tractor weighted that much, Yes he would be a might over . He might go with a 9000 LB trailer and at least a 3/4 ton truck .
I have hauled A 135 MF on tralier Making sure back wheels were in center of tandem axles . Pulled with our Silverado K-2500 Pulled like a dream .

I have an 18' car hauler trailer with a beavertail and 3500 lb axles that I pull behind my Z71 1/2 ton truck. About 6000 lbs is all she wants but I like this trailer in lieu of the goosneck because they are easier to back up into tight spots and it sits lower to the road. I also have an 8x24 foot enclosed car hauler trailer with 5000 lb axles that I pull my old 57 chevy to shows with. The old car weighs about 4200 pounds. I figure with the trailer, the car and all the fixins, I am pulling about 9000 pounds. I would not pull it with the 1/2 ton truck, but pull it with my son's 3/4 ton deisel or my 3/4 ton suburban and it pulls like a dream. I have pulled this cross-country on many occassions and it is great.
