Trailering Question

I"m thinking of buying a Ford F150 P/U for trailering an 8n. Has anyone had a problem (suspension) with trailering with a 1/2 ton truck. I"ve used a 3/4 and 1 ton truck in the past but wasn"t sure if the weight was a little much for a 1/2 ton?

I've trailered 4000-ish# tractors with my dodge 1500 ( same as a chevy 1500 or ford 150 ) hundreds of times.. I use a 1800# tandem axle trailer with electric brakes..

No problems..

I've got a 2004 F-150 Supercrew 4x4 with the 4.6L V8.

In one load on a 16' trailer I towed:
2N Tractor
Ferguson double bottomed plow
5' covington bush hog

I didn't even know it was back there, and I have the smaller V8.

Last time I bought a truck (about 10 years ago), a F150 was a 3/4 ton truck, and the half ton was an F100. I don't see Ford advertising the F100 any more, but I suspect the F150 is still a 3/4 ton. I'd look in the owner's manual either way, and see what it says. Chances are, if you load it correctly (tongue weight) and have brakes on the trailer, you're good to go.

I've towed my 8n with my 1500 dodge, trailer is 16' tandem with 1,000# tounge weight distribution hitch/bars, the weight distribution hitch normally raises your towing capacity. I can run 70 easily on flat road with small ups and downs, havent had the challenge of a mountain yet.

F 150 will handle the 8N trailering easily as long as you make sure there's enough weight up front to keep it from whipping around.

a Ford F150 is actually rated a 5/8's ton and was conceived to get around federal emission regulations in '73.
frame and axles on a 3/4 ton are much heavier than the F100.

The F-100 was a Quarter-ton pickup (1,000) lbs. The F-150 was a "heavy duty" Quarter-ton (1250 lbs.). The F-250 was a 1/2 ton truck.
Like many marketing schemes...the 150 later claimed to be a half-ton truck.
But if you really want a half-ton truck you need a 250.

Lot's of confusion below about ratings on light duty trucks..LOL Anyway,a half ton F150 will tow an N tractor with an implement just fine..Not that I recommend it,but if balanced properly,an s10 or little ranger would pull an N easily.. with a dodge 2500,3/4 ton and a trailer with good brakes,I've pulled 17,000..lets see, thats what, about 6 and a half N series tractors..haha A good friend of mine towed a 4wd Kubota with loader and boxblade all over the place doing landscaping work with a 4cyl auto toyota..

Rich...I use the F-150 & 2-axle trailer to tow my 8N or my 860(which is quite a bit heavier). Trailer brakes are a must, but no trouble pulling.
